Chapter 7 - Breach at the Threshold

-7-

The narrow stone staircase leading down into the subterranean armory acted as a natural bottleneck. In the dim, flickering amber glow of the emergency lights, the shadows danced along the damp concrete walls, distorting shapes and playing tricks on the nerves of anyone foolish enough to descend into my domain.

I positioned myself behind a heavy steel pillar near the back of the bunker, resting the barrel of my AR-15 against a sandbag barrier. Sarah took up a flanking position behind a rack of heavy ordnance crates, her breathing steady and controlled, a stark contrast to the pounding of my own heart.

"Julian," Sarah whispered, her eyes locked on the dark stairwell opening. "If we make it out of this tonight, what happens to your empire?"

"It burns," I answered without a moment's hesitation. "Every account, every dock, every illegal ledger—it all goes to the DOJ. Let the federal prosecutors sort through the ashes. My only priority is getting my boys out of this state alive."

A soft, metallic scrape echoed from the top of the stairs.

“Clear the landing!” a harsh voice barked from above—one of Vance’s tactical operatives.

A flash-bang grenade clattered onto the top step, bouncing down the concrete stairs with a rapid, echoing rattle.

"Flash-bang!" I roared, squeezing my eyes shut and turning my head away just as the device detonated with a blinding, magnesium-white explosion and a deafening shockwave that rattled my teeth.

Before the ringing in my ears could fade, three black-clad operatives poured down the stairwell, their weapons raised, moving in a practiced CQB (Close Quarters Battle) wedge formation.

They didn't expect a counter-ambush.

Sarah opened fire first. Her suppressed Glock spat two rapid rounds, catching the lead operative directly in the ballistic plate of his tactical vest, spinning him backward into his teammate.

Before the second man could bring his rifle to bear, I squeezed the trigger of my carbine. A three-round burst punched through his shoulder and thigh, dropping him to the floor with a scream of agony.

The third operative scrambled back toward the stairwell, but Sarah anticipated the retreat, sweeping her rifle barrel upward and putting a precise round through his combat boot, pinning him to the concrete.

"Clear!" Sarah shouted over the echoes of gunfire.

I rushed forward, kicking the assault rifle away from the groaning lead operative, and pinned him to the floor with my boot. "Where is Vance?" I demanded, pressing the barrel of my rifle against his chest.

The man spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete, grinning up at me through his tactical mask. "You're... you're too late, Mercer. Mrs. Gable... already has the boys."

My blood ran instantly cold. The rifle slipped an inch down his chest.

"What did you say?" I growled, grabbing him by the tactical vest and lifting him off the floor.

"The old woman," he choked out, laughing weakly. "While you were playing soldier down here in the basement... she took the service elevator up to the east wing. Vance’s orders. If we couldn't eliminate you, we take the heirs as insurance to guarantee your silence."

I threw the man back against the concrete, the rage boiling over into a lethal, blind fury. I didn't say a word to Sarah. I sprinted back toward the concealed elevator shaft hidden behind the heavy ordnance racks—an elevator my grandfather had installed to move contraband directly from the trucks to the basement without entering the main house.

Sarah was right behind me, her boots pounding against the floor. "Julian! The east wing elevator is tied into the master grid! Vance's tech team could have reprogrammed the destination floor!"

"Then we take the stairs," I roared, tearing up the spiral concrete steps three at a time, leaving the bunker behind as I raced to reclaim my children from the jaws of the monsters I had invited into my home.
