Chapter 8 - THE INFILTRATION OF THE ESTATE

8

The serenity of the Virginia suburbs was shattered at 9:15 PM when the private security sensors along the perimeter of the Vance estate tripped simultaneously across all four security sectors.

Inside the grand mansion, the lights flickered twice before plunging into total darkness as a localized electromagnetic pulse device knocked out the main electrical grid. Emergency backup generators kicked in within seconds, casting a dim, amber glow across the hallways, but the automated steel security shutters dropped instantly over every exterior window and door, sealing the house like a vault.

Upstairs in her bedroom, ten-year-old Ella froze in terror. She sat at her study desk, halfway through working on a jigsaw puzzle, when the sudden darkness and the grinding mechanical roar of the security shutters echoed through the walls.

Before she could stand up, the doorknob to her bedroom began to rattle violently.

Click. Click.

"Who's there?" Ella called out, her voice trembling as she backed away toward the corner of the room, clutching a stuffed animal against her chest. "Mr. David? Is that you?"

The lock didn't yield to the key; instead, a heavy boot struck the center of the solid oak door with explosive force. The wood splintered inward, the deadbolt shearing completely off its mounts as the door crashed against the interior wall.

Two figures stepped into the dimly lit bedroom. They weren't wearing police uniforms or federal tactical gear. They wore all-black tactical jumpsuits, their faces obscured by opaque ceramic face shields, and their hands gripped suppressed submachine guns held at a low ready.

"Target secured," one of the operatives spoke through a filtered comms unit, his voice flat and robotic. "Moving to extraction point."

Ella screamed, turning to bolt toward the adjoining bathroom, but the lead operative closed the distance in two giant strides, grabbing her arm with iron-like grip and hauling her back into the center of the room.

"Let me go! Help! Daddy!" Ella sobbed, thrashing against his grip, dropping her stuffed animal onto the carpet as he hoisted her effortlessly over his shoulder.

"Quiet down, kid," the operative muttered coldly, pressing a soft cloth saturated with a chemical sedative against her nose and mouth.

Within three seconds, Ella’s frantic struggling slowed, her arms going limp as unconsciousness claimed her. The operative adjusted her weight over his shoulder, turning toward the shattered doorway just as heavy footsteps thundered up the grand staircase outside.

David, the estate’s head of security, rounded the corner of the hallway with his weapon drawn, his face hardened into a mask of pure rage.

"Drop the child!" David roared, leveling his pistol directly at the lead operative's chest.

The second operative didn't hesitate. He stepped in front of his partner, raising his weapon and firing a rapid burst of suppressed rounds directly at the doorway.

David dove to the side, rolling across the hardwood floor as bullets splintered the wall paneling inches from his head. He returned fire, clipping the second operative's tactical vest and sending him stumbling backward into the hallway wall.

"Fallback! Fallback!" the lead operative shouted over his comms unit, carrying the unconscious girl down the secondary service stairwell toward the subterranean garage where an armored extraction van was idling.

David scrambled to his feet, lunging down the hallway in hot pursuit, but as he reached the service stairwell door, a heavy steel security lock slammed shut from below with a definitive clack, triggered by a remote override signal.

David slammed his fist against the steel door in frustration, pulling his encrypted radio from his tactical vest.

"Mr. Vance!" David shouted into the comms unit, his voice breathless and frantic. "They've breached the house! They've taken Ella through the subterranean garage!"

On the other end of the line, there was a fraction of a second of dead silence, followed by Ben’s voice—not panicked, but infused with a cold, lethal fury that sounded like a death sentence.

"Lock down the regional perimeter," Ben ordered, his voice ringing over the secure channel with absolute authority. "They’re not getting off my property alive."
