Chapter 7 - THE OMEGA PROTOCOL

7
The private conference room on the top floor of the Department of Justice headquarters was bathed in the cool, blue glow of twilight filtering through bulletproof glass windows overlooking the glittering monuments of Washington, D.C.
Ben sat alone at the polished mahogany table. The federal charges against him had been officially dropped three hours ago, dismissed by the Inspector General’s office as a retaliatory abuse of power orchestrated by the disgraced former Director Arthur Vance. He was free to leave whenever he wished. But Ben refused to move until he unlocked the final mystery.
Before him sat a ruggedized military laptop connected via a secure fiber-optic link to the Department of Justice mainframes. On the screen was the last remaining file from Arthur’s encrypted archive: The Omega Protocol.
Using his private administrative master key—the same cryptographic signature Arthur had spent years trying to steal from Vance Holdings—Ben bypassed the final firewall layer.
Access Granted.
A single text document appeared on the screen, accompanied by a scanned copy of a handwritten adoption decree dated twelve years ago.
Ben’s eyes scanned the first paragraph, and the breath instantly caught in his throat.
The document wasn't about Elena. It wasn't about the corporate mergers or the defense subsidies.
It was about Ella.
According to the confidential adoption records hidden deep within the federal archives, Ella was not Ben’s biological daughter.
Ben stared at the screen, his mind violently rejecting the words scrolling past his eyes. He had raised Ella since she was an infant. He had held her in his arms when she took her first steps, whispered lullabies when she had nightmares, and fought tooth and nail to protect her from Karen’s cruelty. How could she not be his?
He scrolled down to the genetic verification section, where a DNA comparison chart filled the monitor.
The genetic profile on file for Ella was matched against two individuals: Elena Vance... and Arthur Vance.
Ben’s hands began to shake violently.
Ella wasn't his daughter. She was Arthur’s biological granddaughter—the daughter of Arthur’s estranged youngest son, David Vance, who had mysteriously disappeared six years ago under very similar circumstances to Elena’s accident. When David and his wife had attempted to expose Arthur’s corruption syndicate, Arthur had had them eliminated, but he had spared the infant child, hiding her in plain sight by arranging for Ben—his younger, unsuspecting, fiercely protective brother—to adopt her through a falsified private adoption agency controlled by Karen Moreau.
They hadn't just placed Karen in Ben’s house to steal corporate secrets.
They had placed Karen there to monitor Ella—to ensure the child never discovered her true heritage, and to eliminate her the moment she became old enough to ask questions about her real parents.
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the conference room. All the pieces of the horrifying puzzle finally snapped into place with brutal clarity: the reason Arthur had kept such a close, obsessive watch on the Vance estate; the reason Karen had been so violently resentful of Ella; the reason the syndicate had targeted this family with such calculated, systemic malice.
Ella wasn't just a pawn. She was the rightful heir to the entire Vance family legacy—and the only living witness who could legally dismantle Arthur’s criminal empire from the inside out.
Suddenly, the secure satellite phone resting beside the laptop vibrated violently, breaking the stillness of the room.
Ben snapped his phone up and pressed answer.
"Dad?"
It wasn't David, or a federal agent, or a lawyer.

It was Ella’s voice—coming through the encrypted intercom line from the estate in Virginia. But she wasn't alone. In the background, amid the static of the open line, Ben heard the unmistakable sound of breaking glass, heavy footsteps rushing across hardwood floors, and a cold, unfamiliar voice speaking in a harsh whisper:
"Grab the girl. The boss wants her secured before the feds lock down the estate."
