Chapter 5 - THE WARRANT AND THE AMBUSH

The heavy iron gates of the Vance estate swung open with a slow, ominous groan as three unmarked federal black SUVs roared up the winding gravel driveway, their tires kicking up showers of loose stone against the manicured lawns. Before the vehicles had even come to a complete stop, armed federal agents in tactical black gear poured out from the doors, weapons raised, securing the perimeter with practiced, ruthless efficiency.
Inside the grand foyer, Ben stood tall and immovable, his hands resting calmly at his sides, watching through the floor-to-ceiling glass sidelights as the lead vehicle’s door opened.
Stepping out from the passenger side wasn't a local sheriff or a standard FBI field agent. It was Arthur Vance—dressed in a sharp federal prosecutor’s suit, his silver hair neatly combed, a cold, triumphant smile gracing his thin lips. Flanking him were two heavily armed deputy U.S. marshals holding a stack of official, red-stamped federal documents.
Ben didn't wait for them to breach the door. With a slow, deliberate motion, he reached out and unlocked the heavy mahogany front door, pulling it open wide before they could even raise their fists to knock.
Arthur stopped at the threshold, looking down at his younger brother with an expression of patronizing superiority that made Ben’s blood boil.
"Good afternoon, Benjamin," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm, untouchable authority of a man who believed he held the entire machinery of the United States government in the palm of his hand. "I trust your morning has been productive?"
"Productive enough to know you're standing on borrowed time, Arthur," Ben replied, his voice chillingly calm, echoing off the high vaulted ceiling of the foyer.
Arthur chuckled softly, shaking his head as he stepped into the foyer, motioning for the marshals to follow him. "Still playing the corporate warlord, aren't you? Still believing that your little security system and your encrypted hard drives can protect you from the reality of the world we operate in."
He pulled a folded document from his breast pocket and snapped it open.
"By order of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia," Arthur declared loudly, his voice ringing through the house, "Benjamin Vance, you are formally placed under arrest for federal charges of corporate espionage, embezzlement of government defense subsidies, and obstruction of justice."
From the top of the grand staircase, a small, terrified gasp echoed down.
Ben whipped his head upward. Ella stood at the landing, her hands clutching the wooden banister, her eyes wide with unbridled terror as she stared down at the armed agents swarming her home.
"Daddy...?" she cried out, her voice trembling as tears welled in her eyes. "What's happening? Who are these men?"
"Stay in your room, sweetheart!" Ben called out, his voice softening instantly as he took a step toward the stairs, but a federal agent immediately stepped in his path, raising a heavy hand to block him.
"Don't touch her!" Ben roared, a surge of raw, primal fury breaking through his icy composure as he shoved the agent back with explosive force.
Before the agent could recover, two more tactical officers lunged forward, grabbing Ben’s arms and forcing him down onto his knees against the polished marble floor of the foyer, snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
Arthur walked over, standing directly above his kneeling brother, looking down at him with a mask of absolute, chilling indifference.
"You should have stayed out of the financial archives, Benjamin," Arthur whispered softly, just loud enough for Ben to hear over the chaos of the raid. "You should have let your wife take the blame and quietly packed your bags. But you had to dig into Elena’s old case file, didn't you? You had to go looking for ghosts that were better left buried."
Ben lifted his head, locking his piercing gaze onto Arthur’s eyes. Despite the handcuffs biting into his wrists and the armed agents pressing him against the floor, a dark, dangerous smile touched the corners of Ben’s mouth.
"You think arresting me stops the files from uploading, Arthur?" Ben whispered back, his voice steady and lethal. "You think destroying my house destroys the evidence?"
Arthur’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"
"Look at your phone, big brother," Ben murmured, tilting his head toward the front doors where the black SUVs were idling. "The moment your team breached my perimeter, the dead-man switch on my private server automatically routed every single unredacted file on Project Janus, Elena’s murder, and your offshore slush funds directly to every major news network, the Senate Ethics Committee, and the Attorney General’s personal terminal."

Color instantly drained from Arthur’s face. The untouchable federal prosecutor staggered backward, pulling his phone from his pocket with shaking hands, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic as his screen lit up with hundreds of missed notifications and high-priority emergency alerts.
The trap had sprung. And this time, there was no way out.
