Chapter 7 - Digital Warfare

7

The digital safehouse transformed into a war room of glowing screens and rapid keystrokes. Marcus sat at the head of the long metal table, his fingers moving across three interconnected keyboards with blinding speed. He was deploying a decentralized distribution script—a secure protocol designed to leak the encrypted archives to major investigative journalism outlets, federal regulatory bodies, and the New York financial wire simultaneously at precisely 12:00 PM. Once the data packet hit the decentralized nodes, it couldn't be scrubbed, recalled, or suppressed by any court injunction or corporate gag order.

"Distribution nodes primed," Marcus announced, his eyes locked on the primary terminal. "Fourteen major news networks, three federal agencies, and the state bar association are about to receive the motherload. Corporate manslaughter, financial racketeering, judicial bribery, and the poisoning of David Ashton. It's all there, backed by paper trails, wire transfers, and internal memos."

"What about the framing video of Lauren and Margaret?" I asked, leaning over his shoulder.

"Embedded right at the top of the file package," Marcus smirked. "With a clear title: The Ashton Conspiracy: How a Wealthy Dynasty Engineered a Family Death to Steal a Child. It'll be trending before lunch."

My phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced down. It was an unknown number, but caller ID routed it through a local exchange. I hesitated for a second before hitting accept and putting it on speakerphone, keeping my finger hovering over the mute button.

"Clara," Richard’s voice hissed through the speaker, devoid of any grandfatherly warmth, dripping with venom and naked desperation. "I know you're listening. Don't bother hanging up."

I didn't say a word. I just let the silence stretch, letting him know I wasn't the terrified girl who had cowered in their foyer three days ago.

"You think you're very clever, don't you?" Richard continued, his composure cracking around the edges. "Running off like a common thief, breaking into my study. You have no idea what forces you're playing against. You are fighting a war you cannot possibly win. The courts belong to us. The police belong to us. By sunset, there will be a federal APB out for your arrest, and your daughter will be returned to her rightful legal guardians."

"You murdered your own son, Richard," I finally spoke, my voice steady, cold, and cutting through the line like a razor blade. "And you thought you could do the exact same thing to his child. But your time is up. Every shell company, every bribe, every dirty secret you buried in that study is about to be blasted across every media screen in the country."

A sharp intake of breath echoed on the other end of the line. The arrogant veneer vanished completely, replaced by sudden, panicked realization.

"You... you took the lockbox," Richard choked out, the venom instantly turning to ice. "Clara, listen to me. We can make an arrangement. Drop whatever delusional crusade you're on. Sign over permanent guardianship of Emma, and we will set you up with a trust fund anywhere in the world you want. Complete financial freedom. You can walk away clean."

"I wouldn't sign a deal with the devil if my life depended on it," I said softly. "See you in hell, Richard."

I tapped the end call button, cutting the line mid-sentence. I looked over at Marcus, who was grinning from ear to ear.

"Ten seconds to launch," Marcus said, his finger hovering over the enter key. "Three... two... one... executed."

Across the globe, thousands of digital terminals pinged simultaneously. The Ashton empire’s carefully guarded fortress of lies was about to meet a digital carpet bomb.
