Chapter 10 - The Grandfather Clock

The revelation hit us like a tidal wave. The corporate manslaughter, the framed theft, the psychological abuse—it was all just a desperate smokescreen to prevent anyone from uncovering the true, criminal foundation of the Ashton dynasty. If the international authorities discovered that Ashton Maritime was a front for global money laundering and arms trafficking, every single asset would be seized, every family member implicated in the conspiracy would face life imprisonment, and their legacy would be utterly erased from history.
"That explains why Richard was willing to destroy his own family and frame a three-year-old child," Marcus said, his voice deadly serious. "He wasn't just protecting a corporate trust fund. He was protecting a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise."
"We missed something," I said, staring at the letter in my hands. "David mentioned a physical safety deposit box key hidden inside the old grandfather clock in the main foyer of the mansion."
"The grandfather clock in the foyer," Marcus repeated, standing up quickly. "The one right beside the front door where Richard slapped you."
"Yes," I said, looking up at him. "The federal agents are searching the estate right now, but they're looking for corporate ledgers and financial fraud documents. They don't know about the secret compartment in that clock. If Richard realizes we have this letter, or if his loyalists inside the estate staff clean out that clock before the federal inventory is finalized, the ultimate proof of their syndicate will vanish forever."
"Which means we have to go back," Marcus stated bluntly.
I looked toward the back bedroom, where Emma was sleeping soundly, wrapped in a blanket, completely oblivious to the dark web of international crime her grandfather had woven. I couldn't take her back into that war zone. But I couldn't sit here and let the smoking gun slip through our fingers either.
"No," I said, shaking my head. "You stay here with Emma. I'll go back."
Marcus stared at me as if I had lost my mind. "Clara, are you insane? The estate is crawling with federal marshals, and private security loyal to Richard are still unaccounted for. You can't waltz back into the lion's den alone."
"I'm not going as an intruder this time," I replied, grabbing my jacket and sliding David’s letter into my inner pocket. "The federal marshals have sealed the estate, but the lead investigator heading the raid is Special Agent Thomas Vance—your cousin, right?"
Marcus blinked, surprised. "Tom Vance? Yeah, we share an office in D.C. on occasion. But how do you—"
"Call him," I interrupted. "Tell him you have an independent confidential informant who can deliver the master key to the Ashton syndicate's offshore accounts, provided he meets me discretely at the service entrance of the mansion within two hours. Tell him to bring a local search warrant specifically targeting the foyer clock."

Marcus stared at me for a long moment, reading the fierce determination burning in my eyes. Slowly, a tight, respectful smile crept onto his face.
"You're something else, Clara," he murmured, pulling out his satellite phone. "Let's make a phone call."
