Chapter 12 - The Traitor Within

12

Tom Vance carefully lifted the brass key with tweezers, dropping it into an evidence bag labeled Case File 88-Ashton Syndicate. "Well, I'll be damned. That's the master key to the Aegis Swiss vault in Zurich. With this and the digital ledgers Marcus secured, we have every single asset locked down before Richard’s legal team can scrub the offshore accounts."

"We're not done yet," I said, my eyes scanning the interior of the hidden compartment. Beneath the velvet tray was a secondary compartment containing a small, encrypted micro-cassette tape and a handwritten ledger.

I reached in and pulled out the micro-cassette, turning it over in my hand. "What is this?"

Before Tom could answer, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the far end of the grand hallway—the distinct metallic click of a firearm slide being racked.

"Don't move," a cold, clipped voice echoed through the vaulted foyer.

We spun around. Standing at the top of the grand staircase, illuminated by the harsh emergency floodlights pouring through the open front doors, was Lauren. But she wasn't alone. Flanking her were two men in dark tactical gear—not federal agents, but private security mercenaries loyal to the Ashton family, carrying silenced submachine guns aimed directly at our chests.

"Well, well, well," Lauren sneered, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate steps, her face twisted in an ugly mask of hatred. "The runaway mother and her little federal lapdogs. Did you really think you could waltz back into our house and walk out with our family's legacy?"

Tom Vance instinctively reached for his sidearm, but the two mercenaries instantly stepped forward, laser sights dotting his chest. "Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation. Lower your weapons immediately or you will be charged with assaulting federal officers."

Lauren laughed—a sharp, shrill sound that echoed off the marble floor. "Federal Bureau of Investigation? Agent Vance, darling, do you really think local jurisdiction is the only thing Richard controlled? Half the federal oversight committee in this district is on our payroll."

My mind raced. Marcus had warned us that desperate people make fatal mistakes, but I hadn't expected Lauren to be the one pulling the trigger. She wasn't just a bitter sister-in-law; she was an active, willing participant in the syndicate's operations.

"You poisoned David," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the foyer like a knife, stepping in front of Tom to shield the evidence bag. "You and Richard gave him the neurotoxin so he couldn't stop your laundering schemes."

Lauren stopped at the bottom of the stairs, her smirk widening. "David was weak. He had a conscience—a fatal flaw in the Ashton family. He wanted to turn us into the authorities, give away our wealth to charity, and live some pathetic, ordinary life. We simply accelerated his departure. Just like we were going to accelerate yours, Clara, until you decided to throw a temper tantrum and run off into the woods."

"It's over, Lauren," Tom said calmly, keeping his hands visible while subtly signaling a tactical distress ping on his wrist-worn communicator. "The whole world knows. The federal indictment is already public. Your guards can't shoot their way out of a federal conspiracy case."

May you like

"They don't have to shoot their way out of anything," Lauren whispered, her eyes locking onto mine with pure venom. "They just have to make sure none of you ever leave this house alive. A tragic break-in by rogue criminals. The media will eat it up."

She raised her hand, giving a sharp downward chop to the mercenaries. The air in the foyer turned instantly lethal.
