Chapter 14 - The Secret in the Vault

-14-

The heavy oak doors of the estate’s private underground vault clicked open with a deep, echoing groan. It wasn't the prohibition-era dungeon of a mafia hideout, but a climate-controlled archive room buried three floors beneath the mansion, lined with floor-to-ceiling metal filing cabinets containing the original founding documents, unredacted corporate ledgers, and family trust deeds dating back nearly a century.

Nico walked rapidly down the aisle, his footsteps echoing sharply against the concrete floor, stopping in front of cabinet section seven. He pulled out a heavy metal key from his pocket—a key he hadn't used in decades—and unlocked the reinforced drawer.

I stood right behind him, my hands trembling, the cold air of the vault biting through my wool coat.

“Nico... what was Valentina talking about?” I asked, my voice barely audible in the dead silence of the archive room. “My grandfather... Arthur Vance? What does my family have to do with the Rossi empire?”

Nico didn't answer immediately. He pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger labeled 1998 - Partnership Dissolution & Asset Transfer, flipping through the yellowed pages with frantic speed until his fingers stopped on a specific, dog-eared page near the back.

He handed the ledger to me without a word.

I looked down at the faded typewritten text, my eyes scanning the names and figures.

PARTIES:

1. Rossi Holdings (Represented by Marco Rossi)

2. Vance Capital (Represented by Arthur Vance Sr.)

SUMMARY OF SETTLEMENT:

Following the corporate restructuring of 1998, Rossi Holdings assumed full controlling interest of Vance Capital assets following the sudden bankruptcy and subsequent legal liquidation of Arthur Vance Sr. All related patents, real estate portfolios, and subsidiary accounts were absorbed into the Rossi trust.

My breath caught in my throat. I looked up at Nico, my eyes wide with horror and betrayal. “My grandfather didn't just go bankrupt... your family ruined him. Your father took everything my family owned.”

Nico closed his eyes for a long, agonizing second, pressing the bridge of his nose as if trying to ward off a physical blow. When he opened them, the dark depths were filled with a profound, crushing sorrow.

“I didn't know,” Nico whispered, his voice cracking for the first time since I had met him. “When I married Valentina, when I took over the conglomerate from my father... those records were sealed under a non-disclosure agreement signed by both families to prevent a public scandal. I never looked at the 1998 dissolution files. I swear to you, Luna... I didn't know.”

“You didn't know,” I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. I stepped backward, putting distance between us. “You spent the last month playing savior, funding my foundation, destroying your son and your ex-wife to avenge me... while all along, the very fortune you used to buy my loyalty was built on the ruins of my grandfather's life.”

“Luna, wait—” Nico reached out, his hand hovering in the air between us, terrified to touch me. “That was twenty-five years ago. My father and your grandfather were business partners who went to war over a hostile takeover bid. It wasn't me.”

“No, but it’s your empire,” I said, tears finally spilling over my lashes, hot and bitter against my cheeks. “It’s the foundation of everything you are. Every dollar, every brick of this estate, every ounce of power you used to humiliate Liam and Valentina... it all belongs to the family your father destroyed.”

I turned around, walking briskly toward the vault door, needing to get away from the cold metal cabinets, the ledgers, and the man who had woven my entire salvation out of stolen threads.

“Luna!” Nico’s voice echoed sharply through the vault, stopping me dead in my tracks just before the threshold.

May you like

I didn't turn around.

“If you walk out of this room,” Nico said, his voice dropping into a quiet, devastating plea, “and you think I’m just another Rossi who cares only about power and ledgers... then you never really knew me at all.”
