Chapter 1 - The Silver-Haired Intrusion

"I walked in on my boyfriend in bed with my own sister, and they laughed like I was the one who didn't belong there. They thought humiliating me was the end of my story, but they had no idea I was about to walk into the next night's charity gala with the one man neither of them could ever imagine standing at my side—his own father. What happened after that would leave an entire ballroom speechless.

There are moments that divide your life into a before and an after.

Mine happened at exactly 11:23 on an ordinary Tuesday night.

The instant I unlocked my apartment door, I heard laughter drifting from my bedroom. It wasn't innocent laughter. It was intimate, careless, and so familiar that my stomach twisted before my mind even understood why.

My fingers tightened around my purse as I stood frozen in the hallway. The bedroom door was slightly open, and a thin strip of light spilled onto the floor. Every instinct told me to turn around, but I couldn't. I took one slow step after another until I could finally see inside.

Liam, the man I'd loved for three years, was lying in my bed.

He wasn't alone.

The woman beside him had long blonde hair almost identical to mine.

It was my sister, Amber.

For one impossible second, my brain refused to believe what my eyes were seeing. Then I pulled out my phone with shaking hands and snapped a picture.

The click echoed through the room.

""""What the hell?"""" Liam shouted, scrambling out of bed and grabbing for his clothes. """"Luna, wait! I can explain!""""

Amber didn't even bother to rush.

She calmly wrapped herself in my robe and smiled as if we'd bumped into each other over coffee.

""""Hey, sis,"""" she said. """"You're home early.""""

Something inside me shattered.

Not my heart.

That had already broken.

It was whatever had been holding back my rage.

""""Get out,"""" I whispered.

Amber stepped closer without a trace of shame.

""""He came to me,"""" she said with a smug smile. """"I didn't steal him. He was tired of you. You're predictable, Luna. Safe. I'm the exciting one.""""

My vision blurred.

Not because I wanted to cry.

Because I wanted to scream.

I grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it at Liam. Then another. Then the bedside lamp.

""""Get out of my house!""""

They stumbled toward the door, Liam struggling to pull on his pants while Amber gave me one last victorious smile before disappearing into the hallway.

The apartment fell silent.

I collapsed onto the floor and cried until there were no tears left, until sunrise crept through the curtains I'd forgotten to close.

The next morning, my best friend Maya sat across from me with two cups of coffee and murder in her eyes.

""""I'm going to kill her,"""" she muttered.

""""Get in line,"""" I answered. """"I'm first.""""

I hadn't slept.

But sometime during the night, my heartbreak had transformed into something colder.

""""I don't want revenge because I'm hurt anymore,"""" I admitted. """"I want them to regret everything.""""

Maya leaned forward.

""""What are you planning?""""

""""I'm going to make Liam realize exactly what he lost.""""

""""How?""""

I smiled for the first time since everything fell apart.

""""I'm going to show up with someone better.""""

She nodded.

""""Older.""""

Another nod.

""""Richer.""""

""""Okay...""""

I took a sip of coffee before saying the words that nearly made her choke.

""""I'm borrowing Liam's father.""""

Coffee sprayed across the table.

""""What?""""

""""Nico Rossi.""""

""""You've completely lost your mind.""""

""""I met him at a family dinner six months ago. He's handsome, powerful, divorced, and still single.""""

""""Luna... he's Liam's father.""""

""""Exactly.""""

The idea sounded crazier every time I repeated it.

Which only made me want to do it more.

That evening, Maya convinced me to wear the red dress I'd been too afraid to buy confidence for.

When I stepped into the Grandon Hotel ballroom, every eye seemed to turn toward me.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while champagne flowed freely among New York's wealthiest families. I scanned the room until I found the Rossi family seated near the stage.

Liam looked uncomfortable.

Amber clung to his arm like she'd already won.

His mother, Valentina Rossi, sat beside them wearing diamonds worth more than my apartment.

Then I saw him.

Nico Rossi.

He stood apart from the others, calm, commanding, and impossibly composed. The moment his eyes met mine across the crowded ballroom, something in his expression changed.

He recognized me.

Then, to everyone's astonishment, he set down his drink, ignored every powerful guest trying to stop him, and began walking straight toward me.

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandon Hotel ballroom cast a brilliant, glittering cascade of light over the sea of high-society elites, politicians, and corporate magnates who had gathered for the annual New York Philanthropic Foundation Gala. But for a fleeting moment, all of that radiant illumination seemed to bend and focus on a single point: the exact spot where I stood at the threshold of the grand double doors, my breath caught in my throat, wrapped in a daring red silk dress that felt less like an outfit and more like armor.

Across the cavernous room, the Rossi family table sat in prime placement near the elevated dais. I didn't need to search hard to find them. Liam was fidgeting with his silk tie, his posture stiff, wearing an expensive navy tuxedo that couldn't hide the restless anxiety bleeding through his pores. Right beside him, plastered to his side like a permanent fixture, sat my sister Amber. She was draped in a blinding white gown that practically screamed for attention, her long blonde hair cascading over her shoulders in flawless waves—the very same hair, the very same face configuration, that had mocked me in my own bedroom just twenty-four hours earlier. Valentina Rossi, their elegant, razor-sharp matriarch, sat nearby, conversing with a senator while clutching a champagne flute as though it were a scepter.

They looked invincible. They looked like they owned the room, the night, and the entire world.

And then, Nico Rossi moved.

He didn't rush. He didn't make a spectacle of himself. But the sheer gravitational pull of his presence commanded absolute silence from everyone in his immediate orbit. Nico—a man whose silver-streaked hair, razor-sharp jawline, and cold, calculating dark eyes made him a legend in the corporate acquisition world, and more importantly, Liam’s estranged, formidable father—set his crystal glass down onto a passing waiter’s tray with a soft clink.

Several high-ranking board members and socialites tried to intercept him as he rose from his seat, extending hands for handshakes or murmuring remarks about upcoming mergers. Nico didn't even glance down at them. His gaze locked onto mine across the crowded, suffocating expanse of the ballroom, a slow, knowing smile curving the edges of his lips—a smile that held years of family bitterness, razor-sharp intelligence, and an unexpected spark of raw intrigue.

He began walking straight toward me.

Every single head at the Rossi table turned. I watched Liam’s face drain of color, his jaw dropping open as if he were witnessing a ghost materializing out of thin air. Amber’s triumphant smirk dissolved into a look of absolute, unadulterated horror. Her fingers dug so hard into Liam’s sleeve that the fabric strained against her knuckles.

“Luna,” a deep, resonant voice murmured, vibrating right beside my ear before I even realized Nico had closed the distance between us.

His scent—a sophisticated blend of aged cedarwood, expensive bourbon, and subtle leather—wrapped around me, grounding my racing pulse. He didn't hesitate. Without asking for permission, Nico slipped a warm, heavy hand onto the bare skin of my lower back, his fingers resting with a possessive, authoritative confidence that sent a warm electric shock straight up my spine.

“You’re late,” Nico murmured softly, his dark eyes glinting with a dangerous, secretive amusement. “I was beginning to think you changed your mind about our little arrangement.”

“Traffic on Fifth Avenue was a nightmare,” I managed to reply, my voice steady despite the fact that hundreds of elite New York socialites were currently staring at us with mouths agape.

“A tragedy,” Nico dryly noted, his eyes flicking past my shoulder for a fraction of a second toward the Rossi table, where Liam had literally risen to his feet, knocking his chair back against the polished wood floor with a loud scrape that echoed across the quietening ballroom.

“Nico!” Liam’s voice cracked, high and panicked, cutting through the ambient string quartet music like a siren. He took two stumbling steps forward before freezing, his eyes darting between his father’s hand resting securely on my waist and my own calm, unblinking expression. “What... what is the meaning of this? What are you doing with her?”

The entire room went completely dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing. The waiters paused mid-tray pass. Every single pair of eyes in the Grandon Hotel ballroom was now locked onto the unfolding domestic catastrophe.

Nico turned his body slightly, shielding me with his broad shoulders, casting a look of such absolute, freezing contempt toward his son that Liam visibly recoiled as if he had been struck across the face.

“Watch your tone when you address the woman standing beside me, boy,” Nico’s voice carried effortlessly across the silent hall, smooth as silk and cold as liquid nitrogen. “Unless you’ve suddenly forgotten your manners along with your morals.”

Amber shoved past Liam, her face flushed with a furious, ugly crimson. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger straight at my chest, her voice shrill and unhinged. “She’s a fraud! She’s a nobody! Luna is just a bitter, pathetic ex-girlfriend who—who doesn't belong here! Nico, you can't possibly know what kind of trash she—!”

“Silence, girl,” Nico barked, a single command that cracked through the air like a whip, freezing Amber mid-sentence. He didn't even dignify her with a direct look, treating her as if she were a speck of dust on his polished Italian leather shoes.

Nico lowered his head toward me, his voice dropping into a rich, intimate murmur meant only for my ears. “Are you ready to show them what a real mistake feels like, Luna?”

May you like

I looked past Nico’s shoulder, meeting Liam’s shattered, terrified eyes and Amber’s trembling rage. A cold, fierce power surged through my veins, washing away every tear I had cried the night before.

“Lead the way,” I whispered.
