PART 4 — THE WOMAN AT JFK

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

The person who ordered the hospital baby switch...

The woman responsible for destroying lives...

The woman connected to everything...

Was my mother?

Impossible.

My mother died when I was seventeen.

I buried her.

I cried over her grave.

I carried that loss for nearly two decades.

Yet the woman walking through JFK Airport looked very much alive.

The crowd parted around her.

Not because anyone recognized her.

Because she moved with the confidence of someone accustomed to power.

She wore a cream-colored coat.

Dark sunglasses.

Silver hair pulled neatly behind her shoulders.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

And when her eyes found mine through the terminal windows...

She smiled.

My blood turned cold.

Because there was something familiar about that smile.

Something I couldn't place.

Something buried deep inside my memory.

"Who is she?"

I asked.

The driver remained silent.

Then finally answered.

"Her name is Evelyn Cross."

The name meant nothing to me.

At first.

Then I looked down at the folder.

A memory surfaced.

A document.

A photograph.

A name.

Page ninety-three.

I quickly flipped through the file.

Then found it.

A newspaper clipping.

Twenty years old.

Philanthropist Evelyn Cross Donates Children's Wing to St. Catherine Hospital.

St. Catherine Hospital.

The same hospital where Connor was born.

The same hospital where Madison was born.

The same hospital where someone allegedly switched babies.

My stomach tightened.

"Oh my God."

The driver nodded.

"Exactly."

Then my phone rang.

Richard Harrison.

Again.

I answered immediately.

"You found her."

"Yes."

His voice sounded strained.

More strained than before.

"Sarah, listen carefully."

The seriousness in his tone frightened me.

"Do not let her near the children."

I looked through the glass.

Evelyn was still approaching.

Slowly.

Purposefully.

"Why?"

Silence.

Then:

"Because Connor and Madison aren't the children she's looking for."

The world stopped.

"What?"

Richard took a deep breath.

"The baby switch wasn't a mistake."

Another pause.

"It wasn't even about your children."

My pulse hammered.

"Then who was it about?"

Richard answered.

"You."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Because suddenly nothing made sense anymore.

"Explain."

Richard lowered his voice.

"Sarah..."

A pause.

"You weren't supposed to grow up where you did."

The terminal seemed to tilt.

"What does that mean?"

Then he revealed something that shattered everything I thought I knew.

Thirty-five years earlier...

A newborn baby disappeared from a private hospital.

No witnesses.

No suspects.

No answers.

The case became famous.

National headlines.

Television coverage.

International attention.

Then suddenly...

The investigation vanished.

Evidence disappeared.

Witnesses changed statements.

Police stopped asking questions.

The missing child was never found.

Until now.

Richard's voice grew quieter.

"You were that child."

I couldn't breathe.

No.

No.

No.

The words repeated inside my head.

Because if Richard was telling the truth...

Then the people who raised me weren't my biological parents.

The woman I called Mom wasn't my mother.

And somehow...

Someway...

The woman walking toward me through JFK Airport knew it.

Meanwhile, across Manhattan, Bradley's life continued collapsing.

The clinic had become a circus.

Reporters surrounded every entrance.

Police questioned Tiffany.

Jason refused to leave.

And Bradley sat alone in a consultation room.

Staring at a DNA report.

Not Tiffany's.

His.

The fertility report.

The report proving he could never father children.

The report hidden by his mother for over a decade.

The report she swore was inaccurate.

The report she lied about.

For years.

Then another document arrived.

A second DNA test.

One involving Connor.

And Madison.

Bradley stared at the results.

Then read them again.

Then again.

The answer never changed.

Probability of paternity:

0%.

Connor wasn't his son.

Madison wasn't his daughter.

And suddenly a terrifying question emerged.

If those children weren't his...

Why had his mother spent ten years making sure they remained in his life?

Back at JFK, Evelyn Cross finally reached us.

Airport security seemed strangely uninterested.

Almost as if someone had instructed them not to interfere.

She stopped several feet away.

Then looked directly at Connor.

And Madison.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

Real tears.

Unexpected tears.

"My God."

Her voice trembled.

"They look just like him."

I immediately stepped in front of my children.

"Stay away from them."

Evelyn looked at me.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Almost sad.

"You think I'm your enemy."

I laughed.

"Aren't you?"

Silence.

Then she removed her sunglasses.

And for the first time...

I saw her eyes.

Exactly like mine.

The same shade.

The same shape.

The same expression.

My stomach dropped.

Because suddenly I understood.

Richard wasn't wrong.

Not even close.

Then Evelyn whispered four words.

"Sarah, I'm your mother."

The airport disappeared.

The noise.

The people.

Everything.

Only those words remained.

My mother.

Alive.

Standing in front of me.

After thirty-five years.

Then she said something even worse.

"The children are in danger."

I stared.

"What danger?"

Her face went pale.

"The kind of danger that already killed your father."

Silence.

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Evelyn nodded.

Tears sliding down her cheeks.

"Your real father didn't die naturally."

Another pause.

"He was murdered."

The terminal suddenly felt ice cold.

Because according to every official record...

My biological father died in a boating accident twenty-five years ago.

Yet Evelyn looked absolutely certain.

Then she spoke the name.

The name she had spent decades hiding from.

The name connected to stolen babies.

Hidden fortunes.

Corrupt hospitals.

Missing children.

And murder.

"The Holloway Trust."

The moment she said it, Richard's voice exploded through my phone.

"Sarah, get away from her!"

Too late.

Because at that exact moment, a sniper's bullet shattered the terminal glass.

And Evelyn Cross threw herself in front of me.

The shot struck her squarely in the chest.

As people screamed and dropped to the floor...

Evelyn collapsed into my arms.

Blood spreading across her coat.

Her trembling hand grabbed my wrist.

Then she whispered seven words.

"They finally found the real heir."

And pointed directly at Connor.

May you like

Before losing consciousness.
