PART 2 — THE FLIGHT HE NEVER SAW COMING

The moment the Mercedes merged into airport traffic, my phone started vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

Bradley.

Bradley.

Bradley.

Nine calls in less than three minutes.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I watched Connor sleeping against the window and Madison coloring quietly beside him.

For the first time in years, neither child was asking where their father was.

Neither expected him to show up.

That realization hurt more than the divorce itself.

Children should not become accustomed to disappointment.

Yet mine had.

Because Bradley had trained them to expect absence.

The folder rested heavily on my lap.

Every page represented a lie.

Every signature.

Every transaction.

Every secret account.

Ten years of marriage reduced to paper evidence.

The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

"Mr. Harrison said you'll want to read page thirty-seven first."

I frowned.

"Why page thirty-seven?"

His expression remained neutral.

"Because that's where the real story begins."

I opened the folder.

Flipped past bank records.

Past property purchases.

Past offshore transfers.

Then reached page thirty-seven.

The document looked ordinary.

A medical report.

At first.

Then I noticed the names.

Patient: Tiffany Morgan.

Attending Physician: Dr. Leonard Weiss.

Date: Seven months earlier.

My pulse quickened.

Seven months.

That was important.

Very important.

Because according to Bradley's family...

Tiffany was five months pregnant.

The baby was supposedly conceived after Bradley and I separated.

That timeline had been repeated endlessly.

By Bradley.

By Tiffany.

By his mother.

By everyone.

But the medical report said something very different.

Estimated gestational age: 28 weeks.

I stared.

Then calculated.

Again.

Then again.

The answer never changed.

Twenty-eight weeks.

Which meant Tiffany became pregnant while I was still very much married.

While Bradley was still sleeping beside me.

While he was still promising our children family vacations.

While he was still telling me he loved me.

A strange calm settled over me.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something colder.

The feeling that comes when suspicion finally becomes certainty.

Then I turned the page.

And nearly stopped breathing.

Because the next document wasn't about Tiffany.

It was about Bradley.

A fertility report.

Confidential.

Private.

Extremely private.

I immediately understood why it had been hidden.

Because according to the report...

Bradley couldn't have fathered Tiffany's baby.

The words seemed impossible.

Permanent infertility following surgical complications.

I reread the sentence three times.

Then four.

Then five.

The diagnosis wasn't recent.

The report was nearly twelve years old.

Before our marriage.

Before Connor.

Before Madison.

Before everything.

My hands started shaking.

Because suddenly another impossible question emerged.

If Bradley couldn't father children...

Then who was Connor's father?

Who was Madison's father?

And who was Tiffany carrying?

The Mercedes pulled into JFK's private terminal.

But for several moments I couldn't move.

The documents had transformed everything.

Again.

Then my phone rang once more.

This time it wasn't Bradley.

It was a number I recognized immediately.

Richard Harrison.

The forensic accountant who had spent eighteen months quietly investigating Bradley.

The man responsible for gathering the evidence in my lap.

The man Bradley never knew existed.

I answered.

"Hello."

Richard's voice sounded unusually serious.

"Did you read page thirty-eight?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then:

"There's more."

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always more.

"How much more?"

I asked.

Richard sighed.

Then delivered the sentence that changed everything.

"Bradley isn't the only one who doesn't know."

The airport suddenly felt colder.

"What does that mean?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"Sarah..."

His voice softened.

"Connor and Madison aren't Bradley's children."

The world stopped.

Completely stopped.

The noise of the airport disappeared.

The traffic disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

"What?"

The word barely escaped my lips.

Richard continued carefully.

"The DNA evidence is conclusive."

"No."

"Sarah—"

"No."

Because it made no sense.

None.

I carried both children.

I gave birth to both children.

Bradley was present.

Bradley signed every certificate.

Bradley held them in the delivery room.

How could this be possible?

Then Richard said something that made my blood run cold.

"Look at page fifty-two."

My hands trembled as I turned pages.

Forty-three.

Forty-seven.

Fifty.

Fifty-one.

Then fifty-two.

The photograph nearly made me drop the folder.

A hospital nursery.

My hospital nursery.

Taken ten years earlier.

The date matched Connor's birth.

And standing beside one of the bassinets...

Was Bradley's mother.

Evelyn Parker.

Holding a newborn.

Not lovingly.

Not proudly.

Possessively.

Then I noticed the handwritten note attached beneath the image.

A note written by a nurse.

Unauthorized nursery access. Report ignored by administration.

The room seemed to spin.

Because suddenly memories returned.

Things I dismissed.

Things I explained away.

Things that never made sense.

Evelyn insisting on being alone with Connor.

Evelyn demanding access to medical records.

Evelyn claiming Connor looked nothing like me.

Evelyn treating Madison differently.

Tiny details.

Forgotten details.

Now terrifying details.

Then Richard spoke again.

"We believe the children were switched."

Silence.

Pure silence.

"What?"

His voice remained calm.

Professional.

Careful.

"Ten years ago someone tampered with hospital records."

Another pause.

"We think your biological children may not be the children you raised."

The folder slipped from my hands.

Papers scattered across the seat.

No.

Not possible.

Not Connor.

Not Madison.

Those were my children.

Every scraped knee.

Every bedtime story.

Every fever.

Every nightmare.

Every birthday.

Mine.

Then Richard said something else.

Something even worse.

"The person who ordered the switch appears to be Bradley's mother."

I couldn't breathe.

Why?

Why would anyone do something so monstrous?

Why steal babies?

Why manipulate an entire family?

Then Richard answered the question before I could ask it.

Because hidden inside another folder...

Hidden behind decades of lies...

Was a secret involving inheritance.

A secret involving a dead billionaire.

And a secret involving one child worth nearly two hundred million dollars.

One of the children in my care wasn't merely a child.

They were the missing heir to an enormous fortune.

And Bradley's family had known it from the beginning.

Unfortunately...

So had someone else.

At that exact moment, inside a luxury clinic across Manhattan, Tiffany collapsed during her pregnancy celebration.

Doctors rushed forward.

Bradley's family screamed.

Chaos erupted.

Because the DNA test results Tiffany had secretly ordered arrived that morning.

And according to the report...

Bradley wasn't the father of her baby either.

Worse still...

The real father had just walked into the clinic.

May you like

And he was carrying a gun.
