PART 3 — THE MAN WITH THE GUN

The private clinic exploded into chaos.

Screams echoed through the lobby.

Nurses rushed patients into secured rooms.

Security personnel drew weapons.

And in the center of it all stood a man nobody recognized.

At least not immediately.

He wore a dark coat.

Rainwater dripped from his sleeves.

His face looked exhausted.

Older than his years.

As though life had spent decades punishing him.

In one hand he carried a pistol.

In the other...

A DNA report.

Tiffany stared at him from her wheelchair.

Her face had gone completely white.

Because unlike everyone else in the room...

She knew exactly who he was.

"Jason..."

The name escaped her lips like a confession.

Bradley turned sharply.

"What?"

The man looked directly at Tiffany.

Ignoring everyone else.

Ignoring security.

Ignoring the guns pointed at him.

"You lied."

The words landed like a bomb.

Tiffany began shaking.

"No."

"Don't."

Jason laughed bitterly.

"I spent seven months believing you."

Silence.

"You told me the baby died."

The room froze.

Bradley stared.

His mother stared.

His sister stared.

Everyone stared.

Because suddenly nobody understood what was happening anymore.

Then Jason lifted the DNA report.

"The baby didn't die."

His voice cracked.

"You sold me a funeral."

Tiffany burst into tears.

And for the first time...

Bradley looked afraid.

Because whatever secret existed between Tiffany and Jason...

It was much bigger than an affair.

Back at JFK, my phone rang.

Again.

Richard Harrison.

I answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Richard sounded tense.

"Turn on the news."

I opened a live stream.

The image appeared instantly.

The clinic.

Police vehicles.

Reporters.

Chaos.

Then a reporter spoke.

"We can now confirm that the man who entered the clinic is Jason Mercer."

My stomach tightened.

Why did that name sound familiar?

Then Richard answered the question.

"Check page eighty-four."

I flipped through the folder.

Past financial records.

Past property deeds.

Past corporate filings.

Then reached page eighty-four.

The photograph nearly stopped my heart.

Jason Mercer.

Standing beside Bradley.

Laughing together.

Drinking together.

Vacationing together.

Friends.

Close friends.

Very close friends.

Then another image.

Jason.

Tiffany.

A beach.

Two years earlier.

Holding hands.

The room seemed to spin.

Because according to Bradley...

He met Tiffany only eight months ago.

Another lie.

Then another photograph.

Jason standing outside a fertility clinic.

Date stamp:

Three years earlier.

The realization hit me instantly.

Tiffany hadn't betrayed Bradley.

Not exactly.

She had been with Jason first.

And somehow...

Bradley stole her.

But that wasn't the biggest revelation.

Not even close.

Because attached to the photograph was a legal document.

A trust agreement.

Beneficiary:

Jason Mercer.

Value:

$197 million.

I stared.

Then saw the next line.

Conditional inheritance.

A very specific condition.

The money would transfer only if Jason produced a direct biological heir.

Silence.

Then everything clicked.

The baby.

The DNA test.

The inheritance.

The lies.

Tiffany wasn't carrying Bradley's child.

She was carrying Jason's.

And that baby represented nearly two hundred million dollars.

Suddenly the stakes became horrifyingly clear.

Back at the clinic, Bradley finally found his voice.

"What is he talking about?"

Nobody answered.

Then Tiffany looked at him.

And Bradley immediately understood.

Because guilt was written across her face.

Raw.

Visible.

Impossible to hide.

"You knew."

His voice sounded broken.

"You knew the baby wasn't mine."

Tiffany cried harder.

His mother stepped forward.

"Bradley—"

"Stay out of this!"

The shout echoed through the clinic.

Years of arrogance.

Years of superiority.

Years of certainty.

All cracking at once.

Then Jason delivered another blow.

"Tell him about the apartment."

Tiffany froze.

Bradley's eyes narrowed.

"What apartment?"

Jason laughed.

A cruel laugh.

"The penthouse in Miami."

Silence.

"The one you bought with his money."

The room exploded.

Because suddenly Bradley realized something.

The hidden accounts.

The missing funds.

The mysterious transfers.

They weren't only his secrets.

Tiffany had been stealing too.

From him.

For years.

Meanwhile, thousands of feet above Manhattan, another story was unfolding.

A private helicopter crossed the skyline.

Heading toward JFK.

Inside sat a woman wearing dark sunglasses.

Elegant.

Cold.

Controlled.

She watched news coverage of the clinic on a tablet.

Then smiled.

Because everything was proceeding exactly as planned.

The reporter mentioned Bradley Parker.

Tiffany Morgan.

Jason Mercer.

The divorce.

The scandal.

The inheritance.

The woman turned off the screen.

Then removed a photograph from her purse.

A photograph of Connor.

And Madison.

She traced a finger across the image.

Then whispered:

"After ten years..."

A pause.

"You're finally coming home."

Back at JFK, my driver suddenly received a phone call.

His expression changed instantly.

He turned toward me.

"Ms. Bennett."

Something in his voice frightened me.

"What?"

The driver swallowed.

Then answered.

"We need to leave immediately."

"Why?"

He looked toward the terminal windows.

Toward a woman approaching security.

Toward the woman from the helicopter.

Then he spoke words that made my blood run cold.

"Because the person who ordered the hospital baby switch..."

A pause.

"...just arrived at the airport."

And according to the file in Richard Harrison's possession...

She wasn't Bradley's mother.

May you like

She was mine.
