Chapter 6 - The Paternity Ledger-6

The interior of the St. Jude Children’s Hospital medical pavilion was quiet when the clock on the wall block struck 4:15 p.m. The afternoon sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Nashville, casting a brilliant, warm golden glow across the large glass windows of the postpartum ward.
I sat upright in my hospital bed, dressed in a clean white gown, a cup of warm herbal tea resting between my hands. Lily was sleeping peacefully inside her climate-controlled bassinet beside my side, her tiny pink fingers clutched securely around the small yellow blanket my father had bought her before the trial.
The door to the room slid open with a soft click, and Special Agent Harris walked inside, accompanied by Dr. Joseph Vance—the chief medical examiner and DNA forensic specialist for the state bureau of investigation. He carried a single, sealed white parchment envelope bearing a heavy gold wax seal and a certified registration stamp.
"Claire," Dr. Vance said, his voice dropping into a respectful baritone as he sat down on the stool beside my bed railing. "The forensic testing on the minor's blood samples and Mark’s cheek swabs was finalized forty-five minutes ago under an expedited federal court mandate. The data matrix is absolute."
He broke the gold wax seal, sliding the printed ledger sheets out of the envelope.
"The probability of paternity is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent, Claire," Dr. Vance smiled, his eyes bright with a deep professional satisfaction. "Mark Dawson is the biological father of Lily. The digital brief he received... the data brief Sienna Voss used to claim you were at the riverfront hotel with Marcus Croft... our enhancement units proved that the photographs were deep-system digital fabrications, generated under an AI facial clone network three weeks ago in New York."
I let out a long, slow breath, a deep, profound sense of relief softening the hard lines around my eyes. I didn't look at the document sheets; I looked down into my daughter's face, my hand gently stroking her dark hair as a single, calm tear cut a clean line down my cheek. I hadn't doubted the truth for a single millisecond, but hearing the scientific validation inside that clinical room felt like the final, permanent closing of a door into the dark.
"Where is Mark now, Harris?" I asked quietly.

"He’s sitting inside Holding Cell Three at the federal detention center downtown," Agent Harris said, her face a hard mask of absolute finality. "The district attorney has officially assigned a non-bailable federal racketeering and corporate extortion charge to his file. His mother, Carol, was booked forty minutes ago as an accessory to fraud for hiding the trust fund liabilities from the corporate regulators during the probate transitions."
The door slid open again, and Rachel Bennett stepped into the room, her leather folder clutched under her arm. "The circuit court just finalized the emergency custody orders, Claire. Mark has been stripped of any legal parental or administrative visitation rights to Lily, unconditionally and permanently. His voting shares have been completely liquidated under the trust's Clause Seven, and Vance Acquisitions is entering federal receivership next week."
