Chapter 3 - The Anonymous Brief-3

The heavy, glass security doors of the hospital wing slid open with a sharp, pneumatic hiss twenty minutes later, and Rachel Bennett walked into the room. She didn't look like a standard family attorney; she wore a sharp, tailored dark charcoal wool blazer jacket, her hair pulled back into a flawless vertical chignon, holding a heavy black leather evidence folder under her arm. Behind her stood two uniform state police investigators and a senior medical director from the hospital's forensic pathology unit.
"Claire," Rachel said, her voice a crisp, commanding baritone that instantly silenced Mark's frantic explanations. She walked straight to my bedside, her sharp eyes scanning Lily’s face before she laid the master folder flat across my blanket. "The emergency divorce motions are already registered with the circuit court clerk downtown. The federal financial task force has officially frozen all domestic accounts linked to Vance Acquisitions as of 11:15 a.m."
"Rachel, this is a family matter!" Carol shrieked, scrambling out of her vinyl chair, her pearls clinking against her collarbone. "We can settle the share allocation privately! There’s no need to bring federal investigators into a maternity ward!"
"This stopped being a family matter when your son utilized a forged digital signature token to attempt an illegal asset extraction from the Bennett trust fund last night, Carol," Rachel Bennett said, her face a hard mask of professional satisfaction.
She opened the folder, pulling out three thick blocks of parchment data sheets glinting with the official gold foil seals of the State Banking Authority. She thrust the pages directly against Mark’s chest.
"The anonymous digital brief you received on your phone yesterday afternoon, Mark... the photographs of Claire at the riverfront hotel... our tech units just finished tracing the source routing codes. The files weren't sent by a whistleblower. They were generated under a remote network clone device operating out of the private office annex of your own mistress—Sienna Voss."
My heart missed a beat. Sienna Voss. She was the chief operating officer of the primary multi-national development group that had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of my family’s riverfront real estate portfolio for two years.

"Sienna Voss didn't just sleep with you to humiliate your wife, Mark," Agent Harris—the lead FBI financial investigator who had just stepped through the double doors behind Rachel—explained ruthlessly. "She used your affair, your profound, self-absorbed blindness, and your access to the home vault to download the primary encryption tokens for the Bennett family trust. She engineered this paternity dispute to panic you into filing for divorce today, knowing that the structural chaos would automatically freeze Claire’s voting block for forty-eight hours—giving her syndicate exactly enough time to execute an eighty-five-million-dollar wire transfer to their offshore servers in Cyprus."
Mark dropped onto his knees on the linoleum floorboards beside the gurney rails, his hands shaking so violently the paper documentation slipped from his fingers into the puddle of split coffee. The king without a kingdom sat completely unmasked under the white hospital lights, a pathetic patsy who had destroyed his own child’s security for a woman who treated him like an invoice she could refuse to pay.
