Chapter 2 - The Subterranean Encryption-2

Upstairs, the fragile, rhythmic whimpering of my newborn son fractured the frozen atmosphere of the living room once more. The sound tore through my chest like a piece of shrapnel, but I forced my posture to remain as straight and unyielding as iron. I couldn't run to him yet. Not while the two predators who had isolated his mother were still standing free inside my house.
"Caleb, go upstairs and check on the child's nanny," Mother commanded, her voice dropping an octave, trying to reclaim the domestic authority she had used to rule our family since my father’s passing. "Daniel needs time to process his grief privately before the administrative arrangements are finalized."
"Caleb stays exactly where he is," I said, my hand dropping casually to my belt loop where my tactical multi-tool sat. "Nobody moves inside this structure until I verify the contents of the memory card Emily left in my hand."
I walked past them, my heavy combat boots leaving wet mud tracks across the expensive silk rug Mother had brought into the house last month. I entered my private study at the end of the hall, slamming the solid oak door behind me and sliding the heavy brass deadbolt into place.
The room was dark, smelling of old leather, gun oil, and the dry dust of my civilian absence. I walked straight to the built-in bookshelves, reached behind the legacy legal volumes on the third shelf, and pressed my right thumb flat against the hidden biometric glass scanner of my private server node.
With a soft mechanical click, the central wall panel slid open, revealing a high-performance, non-networked cryptographic mainframe terminal—the secure evidence vault I had linked to Emily’s private mobile device via an encrypted satellite proxy before my deployment.
I pulled the small black micro-SD card from my uniform pocket and slotted it into the terminal’s primary diagnostic bay. The vacuum-tube monitor flickered to life, its interface rendering a rapid cascade of emerald-green diagnostic code lines as it parsed through the card's hidden directories.

LOCALIZED FILE COMPRESSION: 100% COMPLETE.
A single video file appeared on the monitor screen, timestamped at 11:42 p.m. last night.
My hands shook as I clicked the execution icon. The video didn't show a medical emergency or a tragic accident. It rendered a crystal-clear high-definition recording of our kitchen, illuminated by the dim, clinical glow of the stove light.

Emily was sitting at the wooden table, her hands clutching her pregnant stomach, tears of pure terror streaming down her pale cheeks. Standing over her, his face distorted into a demonic mask of unadulterated avarice, was Caleb. In his right hand, he held a sleek, carbon-fiber briefcase—the heavily encrypted ledger container belonging to my late father’s estate trust.
"You're going to sign the asset disclaimer token right now, Emily," Caleb’s recorded voice hissed through the studio monitors, his baritone cold and lethal. "Daniel’s military family trust doesn't protect these deeds if you legally waive the elective shares under this signature token. If you don't validate the transfer before his transport plane touches down tomorrow... Mother and I will ensure your medical status is cleared permanently right here in this room."
