Chapter 10 - The Scent of Baked Pine-10

Four months later.
The morning valley breeze through the high upstate hills was clean, carrying the sharp, sweet scent of blooming white jasmine, damp earth, and the crisp mountain wind that blew through the high pine ridges. The old mansion in the county line cul-de-sac had been sold within weeks of the trial—it was a house built on blood money, a fortress of secrets and corporate conspiracies, and neither my son nor I could bear to step foot inside its walls again.
Our new home was a simple, historic two-story timber cottage nestled in a quiet, forested valley overlooking the winding Silver River below. I had resigned from my active military intelligence commission, using my remaining stock options and the cleared assets of the Vance Family Trust to establish a permanent, secure non-profit sanctuary for children of domestic corporate exploitation and public fraud victims. I didn't care about tactical feeds anymore. I didn't care about encryption codes. My only full-time job now was him.
I sat in a wicker rocking chair on the front porch, a cup of warm black coffee in my hands, watching my son Arthur run through the rows of the green grass lanes with our new golden retriever puppy, Cooper, chasing after his heels.
He was four months old now, a tall, healthy, beautiful baby with the exact same quiet, intelligent eyes and confident smile as his mother Emily. He wore a simple white cotton romper, his face completely bright, radiant, and filled with an absolute, unconditional trust that told me the shadows of our perfect family nightmare had finally, permanently vanished from the physical world.
"Daniel," a sharp, clear voice called out from the driveway.
I turned my head slowly to see Special Agent Harris walking up the steps to the porch, her hands tucked deep into her civilian trench coat pockets, a warm smile touching her eyes as she looked down at the child playing in the grass. She carried a single, small silver document lockbox under her arm.

"The federal court in Washington just finalized the international asset reclamation distribution, Daniel," Agent Harris said, accepting a cup of coffee from my hand as she sat down on the bench beside my chair. "The eighty-five million dollars from the Cyprus freeze has been officially settled into a new state-level public infrastructure trust fund named The Emily Vance Foundation for Child Security and Forensic Advocacy."
She looked out over the clear blue water of the Silver River below, a profound, solemn respect softening the hard lines around her eyes. "Your father’s old land... the family trust matrix... it has been officially cleared of any state property liabilities. The corporate oil transit grids have been permanently banned from entering this county, Daniel. Your father's sanctuary is safe."
