Chapter 7 - RAFAEL VEGA’S CONFESSIONWORD NUMBER - 7

Abigail stared at her father.
Her mind refused to connect the living man before her with the headstone she had visited every Sunday for the first year after his supposed death.
Rafael stepped forward.
She moved back.
Pain crossed his face.
He stopped.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Abby—”
“You let Mom tell me you were dead.”
Lucia began crying.
“Your father had no choice.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Abigail looked at her mother.
“You knew?”
Lucia lowered her eyes.
Abigail felt something inside her fracture.
“You knew he was alive?”
“Not at first.”
“How long?”
Lucia could not answer.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Abigail stared.
Three years.
Three years of dinners.
Birthdays.
Phone calls.
Her mother had listened to Abigail talk about missing her father.
And said nothing.
Abigail pressed a hand over her mouth.
Rafael looked destroyed.
“You can hate us later.”
“I’m doing a good job now.”
“I deserve it.”
“Then start explaining.”
Rafael sat carefully.
His left leg appeared stiff.
“There was a network inside the Moretti organization long before Dante inherited anything.”
“Debt accounts.”
“Yes.”
“Orchard Seventeen.”
“Yes.”
“People being forced to sign away their homes and businesses.”
“Yes.”
Abigail’s voice cracked.
“You helped them?”
“No.”
“Your name is everywhere.”
“Because I kept copies.”
“Why?”
Rafael looked toward Chef Laurent.
Laurent nodded.
Rafael continued.
“Lorenzo Moretti discovered that Enzo Russo had been creating a parallel financial operation.”
“Carlo’s father.”
“Yes.”
“He used legitimate loans, hospital accounts, payroll advances, and business debts to create leverage over people useful to the organization.”
“Lorenzo allowed it.”
“At first.”
Abigail stared.
“At first?”
“Lorenzo was not a good man.”
Rafael said it carefully.
“He used fear. He used illegal money. He hurt people. But the inheritance accounts became something even he could not control.”
“What changed?”
“They stopped targeting enemies.”
Rafael’s eyes darkened.
“They targeted children.”
Abigail went still.
“If a father resisted, his daughter’s tuition debt became leverage. If a mother witnessed something, her son’s medical loan became leverage. Innocent relatives became accounts.”
Lucia wiped her eyes.
“Your father found names of children who had been watched from birth.”
Abigail remembered the photographs from the Vega file.
Herself leaving school.
Her brother at recruitment.
Rafael continued.
“I confronted Lorenzo.”
“What did he do?”
“He ordered the accounts shut down.”
Dante had been right.
Lorenzo had tried to destroy the system.
“But Enzo Russo had already hidden copies,” Rafael said. “And Enzo was not alone.”
“Who else?”
“That is what I spent six years trying to prove.”
“Carlo?”
Rafael’s expression changed.
“Carlo inherited pieces of his father’s network.”
“So he is behind this.”
“No.”
Abigail frowned.
“No?”
“Carlo is guilty of many things. But he is terrified of the same person I am.”
A knock sounded at the apartment door.
Three short taps.
Laurent stiffened.
Rafael stood.
“Is that Dante?”
“No.”
Laurent moved toward the kitchen.
Abigail noticed a second exit.
The knock repeated.
A voice outside called:
“Building maintenance.”
No one moved.
Then the lock began turning.
Laurent pushed Abigail toward the rear door.
“Go.”
“Dad—”
“Now.”
The front door opened.
Two men entered.
Dante came through the rear exit at the same moment.
Everything happened quickly.
One intruder reached inside his coat.
Marco slammed him against the wall.
Matteo intercepted the second.
Dante moved directly toward Abigail.
“You hurt?”
“No.”
His eyes went to Rafael.
Father and Moretti son stared at each other.
Rafael looked shocked.
“You look like Lorenzo.”
Dante answered coldly.
“I hope not.”
A third man appeared in the hallway.
Chef Laurent tackled him before he could enter.
Minutes later, all three intruders were restrained.
Marco searched their pockets.
One carried a card stamped with an unfamiliar symbol.
A black tree.
Rafael’s face lost color.
“No.”
Dante noticed.
“You recognize it.”
Rafael nodded.
“What is it?”
“The Arbor Society.”
Matteo laughed once.
“That sounds like a gardening club.”
Rafael did not smile.
“It is the reason the debt system survived.”
He explained.
The Moretti operation had never been the top.
It had been one branch.
Several powerful families, financiers, attorneys, and business owners shared information.
A person in one city could create a debt in another.
Accounts could be transferred.
Witnesses could be pressured without knowing who ordered it.
The black tree represented the network.
Dante looked at the card.
“How many branches?”
Rafael hesitated.
“At least fourteen.”
Abigail felt sick.
“My debt is connected to this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Rafael looked at her with unbearable sadness.
“Because they believed I gave you something.”
“What?”
“The master index.”
“I don’t have it.”
“I know.”
“Then why keep collecting?”
“To see where you ran.”
Abigail froze.
Rafael continued.
“They never cared about the money. They watched to see who protected you.”
Her eyes moved toward Dante.
“You took the job because you believed the Moretti name would keep you safe.”
“Yes.”
“They wanted that.”
Abigail stared.
“They wanted me working for Dante?”
Rafael nodded.
“Why?”
“Because they believed eventually I would contact you.”
Dante’s expression hardened.
“So Abigail was bait.”
“Yes.”
“For Rafael.”
“Yes.”
Abigail felt violated in a way the bruises had not prepared her for.
Fourteen months of terror had been engineered simply to make her desperate enough to seek protection.
Rafael stepped toward her.
“I tried to stay away.”
“Then why now?”
“Because someone escalated the account.”
“Who?”
Rafael looked at Carlo’s name on a document Dante had brought.
“Someone who wants the master index before the Arbor Society realizes it still exists.”
Matteo frowned.
“Where is it?”
Rafael looked at Abigail.
“You already saw it.”
She stared.
“What?”
“The copper pan.”
Silence.
Dante frowned.
“What about it?”
Rafael almost smiled.
“Your grandmother taught me metalwork before I became a mechanic.”
Abigail remembered the pan.
The one she had scrubbed obsessively.
It belonged to the Moretti kitchen.
Or did it?
Rafael continued.
“Six years ago, Laurent helped me hide a micro-etched index inside the base of a copper pan.”
Chef Laurent nodded.
“I brought it into the Moretti kitchen when Abigail was hired.”
Dante stared at him.
“You hired her deliberately.”
“I recommended her deliberately.”
Abigail looked between them.
Her employment had not been an accident.
Her refuge had been arranged.
Rafael said, “The index contains the true names behind every branch.”
Dante’s face changed.
“And Abigail spent half the night scrubbing it.”
Rafael nodded.
“The evidence was under her hands.”
Matteo’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then slowly lowered it.
“What?”
Matteo looked at Dante.
“The residence was breached.”
Abigail’s heart dropped.
“The kitchen?”
May you like
Matteo nodded.
“The copper pan is gone.”
