Chapter 11 - THE GALA OF GHOSTSWORD NUMBER - 11

The next evening, the Moretti Maritime Museum glittered above the East River as though nothing in the world were wrong.
Black cars arrived beneath white lights.
Politicians.
Developers.
Judges.
Bankers.
Philanthropists.
People whose names appeared throughout the second ledger entered wearing tuxedos and evening gowns.
Abigail watched from an upstairs security room.
“They actually came.”
Rafael stood beside her.
“They do not know we know.”
“Some of them must.”
“Yes.”
“Which ones?”
“That is what tonight tells us.”
Dante had refused to cancel the gala.
Instead, he transformed it into a trap.
Copies of the second ledger had been delivered to five attorneys in five different states.
Encrypted archives were scheduled for automatic release to two newspapers and three federal offices.
If Dante failed to enter a code before midnight, everything became public.
No one person could stop it.
Not Elena.
Not Carlo.
Not even Dante.
Abigail had insisted on that condition.
Dante had agreed without argument.
At eight fifteen, Elena Moretti arrived.
Abigail recognized her immediately from photographs.
Elegant.
Silver-blonde hair.
Black dress.
No visible security.
Guests turned as she entered.
Some looked shocked.
Others looked terrified.
That distinction mattered.
Rafael pointed toward three men who immediately left the ballroom.
“Arbor.”
Marco recorded every reaction.
Dante waited at the center of the room.
Matteo stood beside him.
For the first time in four years, the brothers saw their mother alive.
Elena approached.
She smiled.
“My boys.”
Neither answered.
Her smile weakened.
“Dante.”
“You buried yourself.”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
He looked around the ballroom.
“You protected an organization.”
Elena’s eyes moved briefly toward a camera.
She knew she was being watched.
“Can we speak privately?”
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
She sighed.
“You have Lorenzo’s stubbornness.”
Dante’s expression became cold.
“I apparently have none of his blood.”
A flicker.
Tiny.
But real.
For the first time Elena looked uncertain.
“So you know.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“Then you understand why this must remain private.”
“No.”
Elena lowered her voice.
“Dante, hundreds of companies depend on arrangements you do not understand.”
“Threats.”
“Agreements.”
“Extortion.”
“Stability.”
“Kidnapping.”
Her face hardened.
“You are being emotional.”
From the security room, Abigail almost laughed.
The phrase sounded absurd directed at Dante.
He was the calmest angry person she had ever met.
Elena continued.
“You inherited an empire because people feared disrupting it.”
“Then it isn’t an empire worth keeping.”
“You sound like Lorenzo at the end.”
Dante’s eyes sharpened.
“At the end?”
Elena realized the mistake.
Matteo stepped closer.
“You knew he wanted to expose Arbor.”
Elena looked toward him.
“I knew your father lost perspective.”
“Did you order his poisoning?”
“No.”
“Did you know?”
A silence.
That was enough.
Matteo’s face changed.
“You knew.”
“Elena—”
“You knew Enzo was poisoning him.”
“I knew Enzo believed Lorenzo had become dangerous.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I had two sons to protect.”
Dante laughed once.
“You keep calling control protection.”
Elena’s gaze hardened.
“You have no idea what happens when systems like this collapse.”
“People stop owing debts they never created?”
“People die.”
“They already did.”
She looked toward the upper level.
Directly at the security camera Abigail stood behind.
Abigail felt as though Elena could see her.
“Bring Abigail down.”
Dante did not move.
“She is not part of this conversation.”
“She is the reason we are having it.”
“No.”
Abigail touched the earpiece.
“I’m coming down.”
Dante answered immediately.
“Stay there.”
“I spent fourteen months hiding.”
“This is different.”
“No.”
She left the room.
By the time Abigail entered the ballroom, conversation had nearly stopped.
Elena watched her approach.
“So.”
Abigail stopped beside Dante.
Elena smiled.
“Rafael’s daughter.”
“My name is Abigail.”
“I know.”
“You knew it before I knew yours.”
Elena did not deny it.
“You reactivated my father’s debt.”
“Yes.”
“You ordered collectors to follow me.”
“I ordered pressure.”
“They put their hands around my throat.”
Elena looked briefly annoyed.
“That was not authorized.”
Abigail stared.
“You think that matters?”
“It does.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You built a system where people hurt strangers because someone above them used the word pressure.”
Elena studied her.
“You are intelligent.”
“I’m angry.”
“Those are not mutually exclusive.”
Dante almost smiled.
Elena looked back at him.
“I need your signature.”
She removed a document.
“Transfer the Salerno holdings into the Arbor trust and this ends.”
Abigail asked, “My family?”
“Free.”
“Every debt?”
“Closed.”
“What about everyone else?”
Elena’s expression did not change.
“That is not your concern.”
Abigail looked at Dante.
He looked at her.
No words were needed.
Dante took the document.
Elena relaxed slightly.
He tore it in half.
The entire ballroom went silent.
Then he dropped the pieces onto the floor.
“No more inherited debts.”
Elena’s face changed.
For the first time, the polished mask disappeared.
“You stupid boy.”
Dante’s eyes became cold.
“I am thirty-four years old.”
“You are alive because I made decisions you were too young to understand.”
“And Abigail was hurt because you made decisions you were too powerful to question.”
Elena stepped closer.
“If you release those ledgers, you destroy this family.”
Dante looked toward Matteo.
Then Abigail.
Then Rafael watching from the balcony.
“No.”
He looked back at his mother.
“I destroy your version of it.”
Suddenly the museum lights went out.
Screams erupted.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Marco shouted through Abigail’s earpiece.
“Security breach!”
Dante grabbed Abigail’s arm.
Matteo moved toward Elena.
But Elena was already gone.
A side door stood open.
Then Abigail heard her father’s voice through the comms.
“Lucia!”
A gunshot echoed from upstairs.
Abigail ran.
Dante followed.
They reached the security room.
Rafael lay beside the doorway, bleeding from the shoulder.
Lucia was gone.
On the monitor, one camera still worked.
Elena stood inside the underground parking level with Lucia beside her.
Elena looked directly into the camera.
Then raised a phone.
Abigail’s phone rang.
She answered.
Elena said:
“You wanted every account opened.”
Abigail stared at the screen.
“Yes.”
“Then open the last one.”
A pause.
“Ask Dante what happened to Adrian Salerno.”
Dante stopped moving.
Elena smiled.
May you like
“He has known for years.”
And the screen went black.
