Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER’S LOCKED DRAWERWORD NUMBER - 5

The speaker died before Abigail could ask another question.
She shouted her father’s name until her voice cracked.
Nothing answered.
Dante tore the speaker from the wall.
Behind it, a thin network cable disappeared into concrete.
“Can we trace it?”
Matteo shook his head.
“Not from here.”
Abigail turned toward him.
“Then do something.”
Dante was already calling Marco.
Within minutes, the property was being searched room by room.
No Rafael.
No Lucia.
No Carlo.
But the basement revealed something almost as important.
A second archive.
This one was hidden beneath removable floor panels.
Inside were sealed envelopes labeled with family names.
Hundreds of them.
Not debtors.
Families.
Children.
Spouses.
Parents.
The system had never been built around collecting money.
It had been built around collecting leverage.
If a businessman refused to cooperate, his daughter’s medical bill became a loan.
If a witness threatened to speak, his brother’s restaurant suddenly owed protection fees.
If an employee discovered stolen funds, a mortgage problem appeared.
The original debt barely mattered.
The purpose was to create a legal-looking chain connecting innocent relatives to people who could be controlled.
Abigail found a box marked VEGA.
Dante stopped her before she opened it.
“You do not have to see everything today.”
She looked at him.
“My mother is missing and my father has been alive for six years.”
Then she opened the box.
The first file contained photographs of Abigail leaving school at sixteen.
Another showed Lucia outside the hospital.
Another showed Abigail’s younger brother enlisting in the military.
They had been watched for years.
Her stomach turned.
Then she found a medical invoice.
Lucia Vega’s surgery.
Original patient responsibility:
$3,214.
Abigail stared.
“My father borrowed eighteen thousand.”
Dante took the invoice.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“The hospital only required thirty-two hundred.”
Matteo read the attached note.
He went pale.
“What?”
Dante took it.
The note was handwritten.
CREATE NEED.
OFFER 18.
BIND VEGA.
Abigail felt cold spread through her entire body.
“They created the loan.”
“Yes.”
“My father didn’t need eighteen thousand.”
“No.”
“They wanted him to borrow it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Matteo opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph of Rafael standing beside Lorenzo Moretti near a row of shipping containers.
A handwritten label read:
VEGA HAS COPIES.
Dante understood.
“They knew your father had evidence.”
Abigail sat down heavily.
The debt had never been an act of desperation.
Someone had manipulated her father into accepting money so they could build a claim over him.
A legal excuse.
A leash.
When Rafael resisted, they took him to Orchard Seventeen.
Then staged his death.
Abigail looked at Dante.
“Who kept collecting from me?”
“That’s what we need to learn.”
They returned to Lucia’s apartment before noon because Abigail remembered something.
Her mother had once forbidden her from touching a small locked drawer beneath her sewing table.
Abigail had assumed it contained jewelry or old documents.
Now she knew better.
The drawer required a key.
They did not have one.
Dante broke it open.
Inside sat a single envelope.
On the front:
FOR ABIGAIL, IF RAFAEL DOES NOT COME HOME.
Abigail had to sit before opening it.
The letter inside was written in her father’s hand.
Abby,
If you are reading this, something went wrong.
Your mother will want to protect you by staying silent. Do not blame her. Silence was the only thing I could give her.
There are men around Lorenzo Moretti who built a business out of impossible debts. They do not lend money to make interest.
They lend money to own choices.
They choose people with businesses, information, property, family members, licenses, testimony, or something else worth controlling.
I found the records because Moretti vehicles came through my shop.
I should have walked away.
I copied everything instead.
Abigail covered her mouth.
Dante continued reading when she could not.
There are two kinds of ledgers.
The first contains debts.
The second contains the reasons behind them.
Never fear the first ledger.
Fear the second.
If my name becomes an account, the second ledger is what they are searching for.
Do not give it to Carlo Russo.
Do not give it to Lorenzo.
Do not give it to Matteo unless he can answer this question:
WHAT DID I FIND UNDER THE RED TRUCK?
Matteo stared.
Dante looked at him.
“Well?”
Matteo swallowed.
“A brake line.”
Abigail’s eyes widened.
Matteo continued.
“Mine.”
He looked at the letter.
“Rafael found the cut brake line under my red Alfa Romeo.”
Abigail kept reading.
If Matteo answers correctly, he tried to help.
He may fail.
But he tried.
Dante looked toward his brother.
Matteo turned away.
The letter continued.
If Dante Moretti is old enough to control the family when this happens, judge him by what he destroys, not by what he inherits.
Abigail looked at Dante.
He seemed almost uncomfortable.
At the bottom of the page, Rafael had drawn a small key.
Beside it:
“My father used to rent storage boxes,” Abigail whispered.
“At the repair shop?”
“No. Grand Central terminal.”
Matteo shook his head.
“Those boxes are long gone.”
Dante looked at the number.
“Bank?”
Abigail suddenly remembered.
“My mother had an account at Hudson Commonwealth.”
Within forty minutes they were inside a private conference room at a Manhattan bank.
Box 314 had been paid automatically for eleven years.
The bank manager required identification, probate documents, and enough legal pressure from Dante’s attorneys that Abigail did not ask questions.
Finally, the box opened.
Inside was no money.
No jewelry.
Only three things.
A flash drive.
A cassette tape.
And a brass key labeled:
ORCHARD — SUBLEVEL B.
Matteo looked at Dante.
“We missed a level.”
They returned immediately.
The concealed door to Sublevel B was behind an old boiler.
The brass key worked.
Cold air rolled from below.
They descended sixteen steps.
At the bottom was a room unlike anything upstairs.
No cells.
No restraints.
Only shelves.
Documents.
Photographs.
Recorded interviews.
Copies of checks.
Judges.
Police officers.
Doctors.
Union officials.
Executives.
Politicians.
The second ledger.
Abigail understood instantly.
This was what Rafael had protected.
Not names of debtors.
Names of people who created the debts.
Dante opened one drawer.
His expression darkened.
Matteo opened another.
Then stopped.
“Dante.”
Inside was a file labeled:
LORENZO MORETTI — TERMINATION.
Dante slowly opened it.
A medical report sat on top.
Their father had supposedly died from a heart attack.
The report showed something different.
A toxin had been found in his blood.
Someone had murdered Lorenzo Moretti.
Behind the report was a payment authorization.
Signed two days before his death.
Carlo Russo.
Abigail stared.
“So Carlo killed him?”
Matteo shook his head.
“Maybe.”
Dante flipped the page.
Another signature appeared beneath Carlo’s.
Authorization confirmed by:
RAFAEL VEGA.
Abigail went numb.
“No.”
Dante read it again.
Her father’s signature was unmistakable.
Abigail backed away.
“No.”
Matteo whispered, “Rafael signed the payment that killed our father.”
Dante looked at Abigail.

And for the first time since three in the morning, she saw something in his face more dangerous than anger.
Doubt.
