Chapter 5 - The Unholy Alliance-5

Paulina froze with her hand on the silver door handle of the private hall. Every eye in the room swiveled toward her. She turned around slowly, a forced, defensive smile plastered on her refined face.

"Daniela, don't drag me into your paranoid insanity," Paulina said, adjusting her designer handbag over her shoulder. "I came here as a family friend to celebrate a child's birthday. I have nothing to do with Teresa’s personal finances or your marriage."

"A family friend?" I smiled, pulling a third set of documents from my file—a series of printed emails and contract drafts bearing Paulina's corporate law firm letterhead. "Is that why your law firm drafted the preliminary divorce paperwork for Rodrigo three weeks before this party even took place?"

Rodrigo’s head snapped toward Paulina. "What? Paulina, you told me you were just helping my mother with asset management!"

"She was managing assets, alright," I said, walking toward the center of the room. "Her own family's assets. You see, the Mier family firm has been suffering massive losses in their offshore development projects for the last eighteen months. They needed a capital infusion, fast. Teresa offered them a deal: if Paulina helped engineer my public fall from grace and facilitated Rodrigo's quick remarriage into the Mier family, the Aranda Trust would merge its corporate assets with Mier Enterprises."

"That's a complete lie!" Paulina snapped, her polished mask slipping to reveal sharp, desperate eyes. "You're making baseless accusations!"

"I don't make baseless accusations, Paulina. I have the email thread," I said calmly. "The thread titled 'Birthday Structure.' Let me read an excerpt from an email you sent to Teresa on June 14th."

I cleared my throat and read aloud:

'Teresa, once Daniela is publicly exposed at the party, Rodrigo will be emotionally vulnerable and compliant. My father's team will present the asset merger papers the following morning under the guise of protecting his remaining wealth from Daniela's legal team. Make sure the blue-eye narrative is pushed hard. Public outrage will ensure the board acts fast.'

A sharp gasp echoed through the room. Several of the board members present looked at Paulina with pure disgust.

"You orchestrated a character assassination on an innocent woman and an infant child for corporate leverage," Uncle Mateo said, his voice deadly quiet as he looked at Paulina. "Do you have any idea what the board of directors is going to do to your firm when this reaches the papers tomorrow?"

"Mateo, please, it was just business strategy—" Paulina began, her voice trembling.

"It's corporate conspiracy and defamation," I corrected. "And my lawyer has already filed a formal civil suit against both Mier Enterprises and Teresa Aranda for intentional infliction of emotional distress, conspiracy, and fraud."

Rodrigo fell to his knees on the carpet, clutching his head in his hands. His entire world—his identity, his family, his wealth, his mother, his social standing—had completely disintegrated around him in less than twenty minutes.

"Daniela..." Rodrigo sobbed, looking up at me with eyes full of desperate, pathetic remorse. "Please... look at me. I was foolish. I was manipulated. I believed my mother because I trusted her. Please, give me a chance to fix this. We can leave this room, we can leave this family, and start over just the three of us."

I looked down at the man I had once loved. I remembered the nights I sat on the nursery floor, crying alone while he stayed out late, listening to his mother's poisonous lies. I remembered how he looked at our precious baby girl with suspicion instead of love, all because her eyes weren't the right color.

"Start over?" I asked softly. "Rodrigo, when a house is built on a foundation of rotten wood, you don't rebuild it. You burn it down."
