Chapter 3 - The House of Cards-3

The room exploded into chaos.

Guests burst into furious, excited whispers. Members of the city’s upper crest began checking their phones, some undoubtedly texting the scandal to people outside the room. Uncle Mateo stood up so fast his chair screeched against the marble floor, pushing himself away from Teresa as if she were contagious.

"Is this true, Teresa?" Mateo demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and betrayal. "Is this true?! My father left forty percent of the primary holding company to Rodrigo because he believed Rodrigo was his youngest son! The family trust was structured around Guillermo's bloodline!"

"Mateo, listen to me—" Teresa panicked, reaching out to grasp her brother’s arm, but he violently snatched his arm away.

"Don't touch me!" Mateo barked. "If Rodrigo isn't Guillermo's son, he has zero claim to the trust! The entire corporate restructuring three years ago was based on a fraudulent lineage!"

Rodrigo stood frozen, his face pale, his hands trembling at his sides. He looked at his mother, the woman who had guided every single step of his life, the woman who had dictated who he should love, how he should act, and how he should run his business.

"Mom..." Rodrigo’s voice was barely a whisper, broken and small like a child’s. "Is it true? Am I... am I not an Aranda?"

Teresa looked around the room. She looked at the wealthy socialites who were now staring at her with disgust and malicious glee. She looked at Paulina Mier, who had already quietly gathered her designer handbag and was slinking toward the exit, eager to disconnect her family's name from the radioactive mess unfolding on the carpet.

"Rodrigo, my sweet boy, listen to me," Teresa pleaded, her voice cracking. "It doesn't matter! Guillermo raised you! You carry the name!"

"Answer the question!" Rodrigo screamed, his composure finally snapping. The sudden burst of fury made several guests jump. "Am I Guillermo Aranda's son or not?!"

Teresa covered her face with her hands and sobbed, a sound devoid of dignity—a sound of total defeat. "He... Guillermo couldn't have children after his illness," she wept, her confession spilling out like toxic waste. "He knew! He knew before he died! He helped me hide it to save the family name!"

"He knew?" Mateo interjected angrily. "Guillermo knew and he let you defraud the rest of the board?!"

"He didn't have a choice!" Teresa shrieked, looking up, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark trails. "The company would have collapsed! The stockholders would have pulled out if they knew the head of Aranda Enterprises had no legitimate heir!"

I stood calmly amidst the storm, clutching Lucía tightly. My daughter had fallen quiet again, resting her head against my shoulder, oblivious to the fact that her small presence had just dismantled a forty-year-old empire of lies.

"You see, Rodrigo?" I said quietly, looking at my broken husband. "Your mother spent the last year calling me a fraud. She called my family low-class, poor, and opportunistic. She tried to ruin my reputation and tear my daughter away from me because she was terrified that my daughter’s blue eyes would trigger a genetic investigation into her past."

"Daniela..." Rodrigo looked at me, tears streaming down his face. "Please... I didn't know. I swear to God I didn't know."

"You didn't know about Gabriel Vance," I agreed, my voice cold and unyielding. "But you knew about the plan to humiliate me tonight. You knew your mother was planning to call me out in front of everyone. You saw the emails, Rodrigo. You replied to them. You were willing to throw me to the wolves to preserve your mother's approval."

I took a step back toward my parents, who stood steadfastly beside me, ready to protect us.

"This envelope," I said, holding up the yellow folder, "contains more than just genetic records, Mateo. It contains financial transfer logs. Over the last six months, Teresa hasn't just been planning a public spectacle. She’s been liquidating assets from the Aranda trust to prepare for Rodrigo's divorce from me—and to pay off someone else."

Mateo’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Pay off who?"

I looked directly at Teresa, whose tear-stained face turned from pale to ash-gray.

"Tell them, Teresa," I whispered. "Tell them who has been blackmailing you for the last five years."
