Chapter 10 - The Unraveling-10

With Rodrigo officially withdrawing from the custody challenge, Teresa Aranda’s legal front collapsed like a house of cards.

Without her son’s standing as the father, Teresa had no legal right to petition for custody or visitation of Lucía. The court flatly rejected her motions, and three days later, a judge issued a temporary restraining order barring Teresa from coming within five hundred feet of me or my daughter.

Destroyed on the legal front, Teresa retreated into her sprawling mansion on the outskirts of the city. But the walls of her estate could not shield her from the law.

On Thursday morning, federal agents from the Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by local police, arrived at the gates of the Aranda mansion with a federal search warrant.

I watched the news coverage live from the television in my parents' living room.

The broadcast showed news vans lined up outside the wrought-iron gates. The camera zoomed in as federal agents escorted Teresa Aranda out of her front door in handcuffs. She was dressed in a dark coat, dark sunglasses covering her face, trying desperately to hide her image from the reporters shouting questions at her.

"Teresa Aranda, former matriarch of the prominent Aranda corporate empire, was taken into custody this morning on charges of federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement from the Aranda Family Trust. Sources confirm that millions of dollars were illegally funneled through offshore corporations to conceal an ongoing blackmail plot..."

My mother walked into the room, holding a mug of warm tea, and sat beside me on the sofa. She looked at the screen, letting out a deep sigh.

"It's sad," my mother said gently. "She spent her whole life trying to look like royalty, and now this is how the world will remember her."

"She brought it on herself, Mom," I said. "She was willing to destroy anyone who threatened her picture-perfect lie."

"And what about Rodrigo?" my mother asked softly. "Have you heard from him?"

"He checked into a rehabilitation clinic outside the state yesterday," I replied. "His lawyer called Elena to inform us. He's broke, Mom. Uncle Mateo and the board officially revoked his status as an heir after the DNA results confirmed he had no blood relation to Guillermo. They offered him a small, lump-sum severance to sign away any future corporate claims, and he took it."

"And Paulina?"

I picked up my tablet, pulling up a legal newsletter. "Paulina Mier’s law license was suspended this morning pending a formal ethics review. Her family’s firm is filing for bankruptcy protection after losing their three major investors."

My mother put a tender hand over mine. "It's all over, mi vida. You saved our family."

"Not yet," I whispered, looking out the window toward the garden where Lucía was sitting on a blanket with my father, happily stacking colorful plastic blocks. "There's still one last piece of the puzzle."

"What piece?" my mother asked, confused.

"Julian Vance," I said. "The man who spent five years blackmailing Teresa. The man who holds the last secret."
