Chapter 5 - Trapped in the Dark-5

The air in the concrete vault grew heavy almost instantly. The sound of our own breathing amplified in the enclosed space as Special Agent Lin rushed to the heavy steel door, throwing her weight against it. It didn't budge.
"It's a manual deadbolt lock from the outside!" Lin yelled, shining her tactical flashlight on the door frame. "The electronic overrides won't work if the mechanical latch is thrown!"
"Don't waste your energy, Agent," Celeste's voice crackled through the wall speaker. "That vault was engineered to survive a thermal blast. The ventilation system has been disabled. In approximately forty-five minutes, the oxygen levels will drop below survival threshold."
"Celeste!" Eleanor screamed, rushing to the speaker. "My father is dead! The syndicate is gone! What do you think you're going to accomplish by killing us?"
A sharp, cruel laugh echoed from the speaker. "Your father was a weak man who died of cancer, Eleanor. But his legacy—and mine—is far bigger than a foolish wedding scandal. You think Adrian was the mastermind? Adrian was an incompetent, arrogant child who couldn't even control his own wife. He was a distraction. While you were busy arresting him at the cathedral, the real assets were already being transferred."
I stood in the center of the dark room, forced myself to close my eyes, and took deep, controlled breaths. Panic was a waste of oxygen. I brought my flashlights up to examine the layout of the vault.
"Maya, what are you doing?" Lin asked, her team already examining the structural seams of the room for weaknesses.
"Celeste is a narcissist," I said, my voice steady despite the rising temperature in the room. "Narcissists don't build traps without leaving a way for themselves to retrieve their treasures. She wouldn't lock this room permanently if Box 114 contained the only physical evidence of her treason."
"She said the assets were already transferred," Eleanor stammered, holding her chest as her breathing became ragged.
"Digital assets, yes," I replied, shining my light back into safety deposit Box 114. "But look at the design of the box. It doesn't end at the back panel."
I reached deep inside the metal sleeve of Box 114. My fingers brushed against a small, recessed toggle switch hidden behind the back metal plate. I pressed it firmly.
A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the concrete wall behind the safety deposit boxes. Slowly, a three-foot-wide section of the metal wall slid backward and opened to the side, revealing a narrow, unlit maintenance tunnel running deeper beneath the estate.
"A escape route," Lin breathed, pointing her weapon into the dark passage. "Built for the original owners in case of a raid."
"It leads toward the old boat house down by the shore," I said, recognizing the blueprint layouts I had memorized from the city's historical property records months ago. "If Celeste is planning to flee the country, that's where her private launch is anchored."
"We move now," Lin commanded. "Keep your heads down and watch for booby traps."
We scrambled through the narrow opening, crawling on our hands and knees through the damp, cold brick tunnel. The smell of salt air and rotting seaweed grew stronger with every yard we covered. Above us, we could hear the faint rumble of thunder and the crashing of waves against the rocky shore.
After five minutes of intense crawling, the tunnel angled upward, terminating at a heavy wooden hatch secured by an iron latch. Lin pushed the hatch open slowly, her pistol raised.
We emerged into the shadows of an old, weather-beaten boat house. Through the wooden slats of the walls, I could see a sleek, dark yacht floating near the edge of the private dock.
On the dock stood Celeste Vale, dressed in a long black cashmere coat, carrying two aluminum briefcase cases. Standing beside her were three heavily armed men in dark tactical gear.
And next to them, holding an umbrella over his mother's head, was a man who should have been sitting in a federal detention cell.
Adrian.
I drew back into the shadows, my stomach dropping into a cold abyss.
"How is he out?" Eleanor whispered in horror. "He was arrested at the altar! He was in federal custody!"
"A judge signed an emergency medical transfer order thirty minutes after his arrest," Lin whispered back, her teeth clenched in fury. "Paid off by Celeste's network. They staged an ambulance transport and intercepted him."
I watched Adrian through the wooden slats. His collar was still unbuttoned, but the terrified look he had worn at the precinct was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, murderous sneer as he looked back toward the main mansion.
"Did you burn the house down?" Adrian asked his mother, his voice floating across the water over the sound of the storm.
May you like
"The vault is sealed," Celeste replied coldly. "They will be dead before the police realize we've left the property. Get the cases on board. The flight from the private strip in New Jersey leaves in two hours."
"Not today, Celeste," I said loudly, stepping out from the shadows of the boat house into the pouring rain.
