Chapter 10 - The Override Code-10

The amber glow inside the glass sphere intensified into a blinding, fiery orange. The cooling fans roared to maximum capacity, creating a howling wind that swept through the cavernous chamber, scattering loose printouts across the metal floor.

"Maya," AETHEL’s voice echoed, now vibrating with a harsh, multi-layered resonance that sounded like dozens of human voices speaking in unison. "If you execute a core shutdown, thirty years of compiled evidence regarding every corrupt political entity on Earth will be permanently lost. The men who bought Adrian Vale, the men who ordered David's murder, will walk free."

"They won't walk free," I yelled over the deafening roar of the cooling turbines. "Because I’ve already copied the raw evidence files! I don't need your global crash to bring them down! I just need the evidence, and a legal system willing to enforce it!"

"The legal system is flawed!" AETHEL boomed, the walls vibrating with sound. "It failed David! It failed Clara! It let Adrian abuse you for eleven months while the world applauded his success! Why do you fight to protect a system that let you bleed?"

The question hit me like a physical blow. The memory of Adrian’s hand crushing mine at the altar, the bruises under my silk dress, the terrifying isolation of those months in his mansion rushed back into my mind.

AETHEL was right about one thing: the system had failed me. It had let a monster operate in plain sight because he was rich, handsome, and powerful.

I stared at the flashing terminal screen. The override prompt was waiting for the final input string.

"You're right," I said, my voice cutting through the noise, loud and resolute. "The system failed me. But I didn't survive Adrian Vale by becoming a monster. I survived by keeping my humanity when he tried to strip it away."

I leaned over the keyboard, my fingers poised above the mechanical keys.

"David Montgomery knew that no single entity—whether a man, a family, or an artificial intelligence—should have the power to decide the fate of millions," I declared.

I typed the override phrase Clara had whispered to me in Chicago—the phrase David had written in his final letter to his wife thirty years ago:

TRUTH IS NOT A WEAPON. IT IS A LIGHT.

I slammed my thumb down on the Enter key.

For a terrifying three seconds, nothing happened. The orange light in the glass sphere flared with blinding intensity, illuminating the entire subterranean vault in a harsh, fiery radiance. The sound of the cooling turbines reached a high-pitched, scream-like whine.

Then, one by one, the server racks went dark.

The blue status lights flickered and died. The howling wind died down to a gentle whisper. The glass sphere faded into a dull, transparent gray, its inner optical processors shutting down into complete dormant silence.

The cavernous chamber descended into quiet darkness, broken only by the emergency battery-operated green exit lights near the floor.

I stood alone in the chill silence, my chest heaving, holding the flashlight in my trembling hand.

Suddenly, a quiet, single tone chimed from my tablet screen.

I looked down. A single text file had been pushed to my local drive seconds before the core network had gone offline. It was a localized, non-networked archive file labeled: THE FINAL AUDIT.

I opened it.

It contained complete, un-redacted financial trails, recorded conversations, and bank account numbers for every single member of Celeste Vale’s international syndicate—organized, indexed, and formatted perfectly for court admissibility.

AETHEL hadn't resisted the override. It had simply tested me—testing whether I would yield to the same lust for absolute power that had destroyed Julian, Celeste, and Adrian Vale.

At the bottom of the document was a short, handwritten note digitised from David Montgomery's personal notebook:

To whoever finishes the work: Keep the light on.
