Chapter 13 - The Unseen Threads-13

Six months later, winter returned to the northeastern coast. Snow fell softly over the rolling hills of Connecticut, blanketed the dark trees, and covered the long-abandoned grounds of Vale Manor in a thick layer of pristine white.

The estate had been purchased at a court auction by a land conservation trust. The grand mansion, with all its dark history and hidden underground vaults, was slated for complete demolition in the spring to allow the land to return to a public state park.

I stood near the edge of the stone terrace, wearing a heavy wool coat and thick boots, watching the snow fall over the cold ocean waves below.

Footsteps crunched in the fresh snow behind me.

I turned to see Eleanor Vance walking up the stone path, carrying a thick thermos of hot coffee and two ceramic mugs.

"I thought I'd find you here," Eleanor said, handing me a steaming mug. "The demolition permit was signed this morning. By May, there won't be a single stone left standing."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "Some places carry too many bad memories to be saved."

"How are you holding up?" Eleanor asked, her eyes searching my face. "The new class of forensic fellows at the institute starts next Monday. You've been working eighty hours a week."

"Work is good," I replied with a faint smile. "It keeps the mind sharp. Besides, we just uncovered a forty-million-dollar offshore tax shelter being run by a real estate mogul in Miami. The DoJ is opening an inquiry tomorrow."

Eleanor laughed softly, shaking her head. "You really never stop, do you?"

"Numbers don't sleep, Eleanor," I chuckled. "So neither do I."

We stood in comfortable silence for a while, watching the snow accumulate on the balustrade. The atmosphere was peaceful, a stark contrast to the terrifying night we had spent escaping from the vault below our feet.

"Eleanor," I spoke up after a moment, my tone turning serious. "Do you ever think about what AETHEL said in that chamber?"

Eleanor paused, her mug stopping near her lips. "About the system being broken?"

"About how deep it goes," I clarified, turning to face her. "We brought down Adrian and Celeste. We exposed Senator Vance's old network. But when I was auditing the secondary routing paths in the final data archive... I found something else."

Eleanor's expression went rigid. "What do you mean?"

"The shadow accounts didn't originate with Celeste," I explained, my voice low. "Celeste was just the North American manager. The network has nodes in London, Geneva, Singapore, and Dubai. They were all linked to the same core algorithm."

"Maya..." Eleanor whispered, a look of cautious concern entering her eyes. "You did your job. The Vales are in prison. You don't have to carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders."

"I'm not carrying it," I said, pulling a small, sleek black encrypted drive from my pocket—the single physical copy of THE FINAL AUDIT I had kept. "I'm just keeping the light on."

She looked at the drive in my hand, then up at my eyes. She saw no fear, no trauma, no hesitation—only the calm, terrifying precision of a master investigator who had found her true calling.

"Who's the first target on that drive?" Eleanor asked quiet.

I smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached my eyes.

"A private banking consortium in Zurich," I answered. "They think they're invisible."

"When do we start?" Eleanor asked, a matching smile touching her lips.

"Right now," I said.
