Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY MARIS CHOSE ME

-13

I thought I knew why Maris married me.

Stable.

Credible.

Useful.

Then, twelve years after our courthouse wedding, she told me something that complicated it.

Not excused.

Complicated.

We met at Lumi’s college graduation dinner.

Yes, all of us.

Maris.

Naomi.

Tessa.

Me.

Lumi.

No Celia.

After dinner, Maris asked five minutes.

Outside restaurant.

“I lied about something in court.”

My stomach tightened despite years.

“What?”

“Not under oath.”

Good.

“What?”

“I let everyone believe I met you by accident.”

We did match on dating app after ER visit.

“You recognized me?”

“Yes.”

From hospital.

“Then found?”

She had seen my name on discharge documents? As nurse, perhaps name badge/after-visit summary may list care team. She searched me.

Weeks later she saw dating profile and intentionally matched.

Not illegal.

“Why?”

“At first because I liked you.”

Okay.

“Then?”

She had already received age-eight audit notice.

Her lawyer—not Dana yet—suggested household stability could help answer trustee questions about high reimbursements.

Maris thought marriage to stable professional would make her look responsible.

“So I was a credential.”

“Partly.”

Ouch.

She cried.

“But I also really liked you.”

Both.

Then after dating months, she considered not marriage because guilt.

But trust audit.

Then she proposed? We married after year.

She pushed timeline.

Why county clerk Thursday?

She said romance/simple.

Also wanted marital status established before next trustee annual review.

I stared.

“So the marriage itself was part of financial presentation.”

“Yes.”

That hurt new.

Not accusation plot yet.

That came later.

But even beginning had instrumental layer.

“Why tell now?”

“Because Lumi’s adoption hearing.”

My chest stopped.

“I don’t want her choosing you while there’s still a lie about how you entered.”

Maris had told Lumi already?

“No. I wanted tell you first, then her together if you want.”

Good.

I said:

“She deserves.”

We told.

Lumi listened.

“So you stalked Gideon?”

Maris:

“Internet searched.”

“Mom.”

Then serious.

“Did you ever love him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you marry only trust?”

“No.”

“How much?”

Impossible.

Maris said:

“I don’t know.”

Honest.

Then Lumi asked me:

“Does it change adoption?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Why?

Because adoption decision based eleven years after, not origin.

Then:

“Are you mad?”

“Yes.”

At Maris.

Not Lumi.

Then Maris said:

“I’m sorry.”

Again.

I did something new.

“I forgive that part.”

She stared.

I had not said forgiveness before.

“Why now?”

“Because it no longer controls anything.”

Maybe.

Forgiveness not necessary, but possible.

Then:

“Not all.”

“I know.”

Good.

Then Lumi said:

“I don’t need you two to resolve marriage for me.”

Exactly.

We laughed.

Then adult adoption hearing.

Wait chapter 15. Chapter 14 can be about Gideon sees Maris at 412? Maybe closing all roles.

Let's deepen secret perhaps final discovered piece from Jonah's trustee: Maris had initially attempted to use Jonah’s own anger against him and then repeated Gideon; we know. Could there be final horror? User wants "bí mật kinh hoàng đằng sau". Already done. Need ending compelling. Chapter 14 can be adoption prep + Jonah memorial + Maris giving recorder back? The original recorder maybe evidence returned. Perhaps Lumi gets it at 21 and chooses to destroy it. Powerful. Let's do.
