Chapter 12 - THE PERSON MARIS BECAME AFTER SHE LOST CONTROL

-12
Maris did not become a saint.
That was important.
She still interrupted.
Still hated being corrected.
Still overpacked for trips.
Still believed most restaurants served coffee too weak.
Rehabilitation did not replace personality.
What changed was what she did when someone said no.
Before:
No became argument.
Manipulation.
Evidence.
After:
No became something she had to survive.
Lumi noticed.
At nineteen, she told Maris:
“I’m not coming home Thanksgiving. I’m going with friends.”
Maris’s face fell on video.
Old Maris would say:
After everything I lost.
Family matters.
Naomi gets more.
Gideon poisoned.
Instead:
“I’m disappointed.”
Then:
“Have fun.”
After call Lumi stared.
“That was weird.”
“Healthy weird.”
Then Maris texted later:
I had to take walk before answering.
Honest.
No burden? Maybe minor.
She was learning.
Then her work.
No financial services.
She built small marketing job.
Eventually promoted.
Restitution fully satisfied through required terms.
She opened retirement account.
Showed no one.
Good.
Then Celia.
Sisters estranged after trial.
At nineteen, Maris asked Lumi permission before mentioning Celia.
“Do you want updates?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Boundary.
Celia eventually wrote directly to Lumi after she turned adult.
One letter.
I was no longer gatekeeper.
Lumi chose open with therapist.
Celia apologized:
“I helped your mother turn your trust into our family checking account.”
Strong.
Then:
“I told myself we were only taking what she deserved for raising you.”
There.
Mothers often unpaid labor, but child trust not compensation unless authorized.
She said:
“I knew some services didn’t happen.”
Good.
Lumi did not reply.
Her choice.
Then Jonah’s legacy.
At twenty, Lumi visited Ohio alone to meet his old friends.
Not with Naomi.
She learned father:
Loved motorcycles.
Bad singer.
Once cheated at cards.
Could be impatient.
He had dated after Maris.
Not saint.
One friend said:
“Jonah could scare people when angry.”
Lumi absorbed.
This did not validate Maris’s whole narrative nor erase.
Truth layered.
She said later:
“I hate that everyone wanted one parent good.”
Yes.
Then she made animated short for college.
Not about case directly.
A child carries two backpacks, one filled with adults’ words, one with crayons. Eventually drops heavy one.
I cried.
She won student festival.
Maris attended.
Naomi.
Me.
Tessa.
At Q&A someone asked inspiration.
Lumi said:
“Growing up.”
No trauma details.
Good.
Then adoption petition processing.
Adult adoption hearing scheduled when Lumi nineteen due paperwork.
Why delay? She was at college, court schedule.
No urgency.
I wondered if she might change.
Fine.
She didn't.
Maris asked:
“Will adoption make me less mother legally?”
Adult adoption may alter inheritance/legal parent ties depending law. Could affect Maris. We need handle. In many states adult adoption can create legal parent-child relation and may affect inheritance, while biological parental ties maybe not automatically severed? Varies. To avoid legal specifics, let's say lawyers explained state law and estate impacts; Lumi structured documents to preserve desired inheritance and relationship. No need claims.
Maris said:
“I support.”
Then:
“It hurts.”
Allowed.
Lumi:
“I know.”
No need fix.
Then she asked:
“Why Gideon?”
Lumi:
“Because he stayed without legal power.”
That line.
Maris cried.
“I had legal power and used it wrong.”
“Yes.”
No cruelty.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
At some point apologies become background.
Then me.
Adult adoption felt strange.
I had no biological children.
Tessa and I chose none.
Lumi was family.
Paper later.
Before hearing, I visited 412 Birch again alone? No, not needed.
I opened my phone notes app.
Original timestamps still:
7:18 p.m.
6:42 a.m.
9:11 p.m.
4:03 p.m.
I had never deleted.
I looked.
At first, those notes were evidence child didn't like me.
Then pattern.
Now relic.
I deleted them.
Not evidence needed.
Case closed years.
Why keep?
Fear.
I deleted.
Tessa asked:
“How feel?”
“Like bad charting.”
She laughed.
Then:
“You know you can stop being nurse at home.”
May you like
“I’m trying.”
Good.
