Chapter 8 - The Shadow Syndicate-8

The heavy thud of tactical boots echoed down the concrete maintenance stairs, vibrating through the floorboards of the server room. The sound was methodical, calculated, and rapidly approaching our position.
"Liam, lock the glass door from the inside," I said, my voice shaking as I kept my eyes locked on the download screen.
PROGRESS: 52%... 55%... 58%...
Liam slammed the heavy manual locking lever on the glass frame, driving three solid steel deadbolts into the concrete header. He then hauled a heavy metal server storage cabinet across the floor, wedging it firmly against the frame to provide an extra layer of reinforcement.
"They’re in the main corridor," Liam whispered, drawing his small utility knife, his body tensed in front of the glass partition.
A second later, the dark silhouettes of the tactical team appeared at the end of the white-lit hallway. They moved with military precision, their submachine guns raised, clearing every alcove before stepping into the light. Behind them walked Ethan and Julianna.
Ethan looked through the glass door, his eyes finding me sitting at the master console. His face distorted into an expression of pure, animalistic hatred. He stepped forward, tapping his fingers against the reinforced glass.
"Clara!" his voice bellowed through the external intercom system on the wall. "Open the door! You think this glass will keep you safe? Those men out here are former state operators funded by Julianna’s father. They have breaching charges that will turn this entire room into a furnace in ten seconds!"
I didn't answer. I kept my fingers moving, manually routing the incoming data streams through a secondary encryption proxy to speed up the download.
PROGRESS: 74%... 77%... 80%...
Julianna Vance stepped forward, pushing Ethan aside. She leaned close to the glass, her dark hair slicked back, her eyes cold and calculating. "Clara, listen to me very carefully," she said, her voice smooth and entirely devoid of emotion through the speaker. "You think you're playing a heroic game of corporate exposure. You think you're going to hand those files to the feds and watch us burn. But you don't understand who actually owns those accounts in Cyprus."
She paused, a cruel, mocking smile touching her lips.
"The offshore syndicate isn't an independent criminal organization, Clara. It’s a sovereign wealth allocation fund controlled by the highest-ranking members of the state legislature—including the governor himself. The money Apex launders isn't dirty cash from drug deals; it’s the systemic siphon of federal infrastructure grants designed to fund the entire political apparatus of this region. If you leak those files, you aren't just destroying Ethan. You're collapsing the entire state government. Do you really think a federal prosecutor in Washington is going to risk an unprecedented constitutional crisis over a domestic violence case?"
My hand froze over the keyboard for a fraction of a second. The scale of the conspiracy was dizzying, reaching far beyond the borders of Silver Valley or the municipal boundaries of Apex Development. It was a closed loop of absolute power, protected by the very laws I was trying to use to save my life.

"She’s trying to get into your head, Clara," Liam said, his voice firm as he looked back at me. "Don't stop. It doesn't matter how high it goes. A monster is still a monster, and they still bleed."
Julianna saw my hesitation vanish, and her smile disappeared, replaced by a cold, lethal severity. She turned to the tactical lead beside her and gave a sharp, downward nod. "Breach it. Kill the doctor. Bring me the girl and the laptop."
