Chapter 11 - The Financial Execution-11

The sudden realization of total, absolute abandonment cracked Ethan’s composure like glass. His eyes darted from the screen displaying the invading federal agents to the empty doorway where Julianna had just vanished. The empire he had spent his entire life building, the political machine he thought made him invincible, had dissolved into nothingness in the span of thirty seconds.
"She left you, Ethan," I whispered, ignoring the pain in my chest as I looked up into his shattered eyes. "Just like you left me every time you closed that door and thought no one could see you. You're alone now."
With a guttural roar of pure, unadulterated madness, Ethan tightened his finger on the trigger of the pistol.
BANG.
The sound was deafening, a blinding flash of white light that erupted in the narrow space between us. But the bullet didn't tear through my skull.
In the exact millisecond Ethan’s focus wavered, Liam had launched his body forward across the room. He slammed his forearm into Ethan's wrist, deflecting the shot into the ceiling panels above. The force of Liam’s tackle drove Ethan back into the administrative master console, shattering the main diagnostic monitors in a brilliant cascade of blue sparks and flying glass shards.
The two men crashed onto the floor, a brutal, chaotic tangle of limbs and fury. Ethan fought with the manic, desperate strength of a man who knew his life was effectively over, clawing at Liam's face and trying to bring the pistol back to bear.
But Liam was driven by a deep, protective brotherly rage that had been building for four years. He pinned Ethan's right arm to the concrete floor, using his knee to crush the bones in Ethan's wrist until the silver pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering across the epoxy floorboards into the darkness beneath the server racks.
"It’s over, Callahan!" Liam roared, driving a heavy, solid punch into Ethan’s jaw that silenced his screams and left him slumped against the base of the desk, his face covered in blood and his eyes rolling back into his head.
I dragged myself away from the console, my hands scraping against the broken glass on the floor, until I reached the edge of the doorway. The air in the corridor was thick with the sound of barking commands and heavy tactical boots as the FBI agents flooded the sub-level, their bright white flashlights cutting through the lingering smoke.
"Federal agents! Put your hands on your heads!" a loud voice bellowed as the lead tactical team burst through the shattered glass door frame.
Liam immediately stood up, raising his hands in the air, his face covered in soot and sweat, but his eyes never leaving my face. "The suspect is neutralized," Liam said, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "My sister needs immediate medical attention. She has internal injuries."
An agent in a sharp navy blazer stepped into the room, bypassing the tactical teams. Her badge identified her as Special Agent Harris, Financial Crimes Division. She looked at Ethan’s unconscious body, then down at the encrypted briefcase data drive sitting on the floorboards.
She picked up the drive, looking at me with a profound, solemn respect. "Mrs. Callahan, I’m Agent Harris. The decentralized blockchain transfer you executed ten minutes ago just landed on the director’s desk in Washington. The Governor has already been taken into custody at the state capital, and Senator Vance is currently being detained at the airport."

She knelt beside me, helping Liam support my shoulders as a team of federal paramedics rushed into the room with a trauma gurney.
"You did it, Clara," Agent Harris whispered gently. "You didn't just expose your husband. You broke the entire machine."
