Chapter 2 - The Forensics of Flesh-2

The sterile smell of rubbing alcohol and iodine filled my nose as the nurse, a gentle woman named Maria, carefully wiped away the dried blood from the split in my lower lip. Every touch sent a sharp, white-hot spike of agony radiating across my jawline, but I didn't cry out. I had spent three years learning how to swallow my screams, how to turn my body into a silent fortress while Ethan tried to break it down piece by piece.

Liam stood at the foot of the bed, holding a digital tablet containing my rapid CT scans and X-rays. His jaw was clenched so tightly I could see the muscles pulsing beneath the skin of his neck.

"Two fractured ribs on the left side, Clara," he said, his voice raw with a mixture of professional detachment and sibling heartbreak. "A mild concussion, severe soft-tissue bruising around the larynx consistent with manual strangulation, and defensive contusions along both forearms. He held you down, didn't he?"

"He wanted the encryption key," I whispered, the words tearing at my raw throat. "He found out about the independent forensic audit I initiated through the Delaware shell account. He didn't just think I was leaving him, Liam. He realized I was dismantling Apex from the inside out."

"Let the lawyers handle Apex," Liam said, stepping closer and gently touching the unbruised skin of my forehead. "Right now, the police are taking his formal statement in holding cell three. The district attorney’s office has already assigned a domestic violence specialist to the case. We’re going to file for an emergency protective order within the hour."

"It won't keep him behind bars, Liam," I said, forcing myself to sit up despite the crushing pain in my chest. "You don't understand the scale of what Ethan is involved in. Apex Development isn't just a construction firm anymore. Over the last eighteen months, Ethan has been using our commercial projects in the downtown district to launder money for an offshore syndicate based out of Nicosia. He’s deep in debt to people who don't use lawyers to solve their problems."

Liam’s expression hardened. "What are you talking about?"

"The affair," I said, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping my lips. "The reason Ethan became so reckless. Six months ago, I discovered he was sleeping with Julianna Vance—no relation to us, she’s the daughter of Senator Thomas Vance, the chairman of the State Urban Development Committee. I thought it was just a typical cliché, a powerful man cheating on his wife with a younger, well-connected woman. But when I started tracing the wire transfers, I realized Julianna wasn't just his mistress. She was his handler."

Liam stared at me, the clinical focus of a doctor entirely vanished, replaced by the protective instinct of an older brother who realized his sister was standing on the edge of a bottomless abyss.

"Julianna Vance is the intermediary for the offshore funds," I explained, my voice growing stronger as the adrenaline began to clear the fog of the concussion. "The Senator passes the municipal rezoning grants to Apex, Ethan inflates the construction invoices by three hundred percent, and the excess capital is funneled through Julianna’s private consultancy firm back into the Cypriot accounts. It’s a multi-million-dollar political bribery ring. And last night, I finally found the master ledger that proves it."

"Where is it?" Liam asked, his hand dropping to his pocket where his personal phone sat.

"It’s in the black leather briefcase Ethan brought with him to the hospital," I said, my eyes widening with fear as I looked around the empty room. "He thought it was just financial paperwork for the audit. He doesn't know I embedded a localized hardware clone of the entire server directory onto a hidden partition inside that briefcase's integrated smart-lock. Liam... if his lawyers arrive and secure his personal property before we can extract that data drive, the evidence will disappear forever, and he will walk out of that courthouse a free man."

Before Liam could answer, the glass door to the trauma bay slid open. Detective Miller, the lead investigator assigned to the hospital precinct, stepped inside. His face was grim, his hands empty.

"Dr. Vance, Mrs. Callahan," Miller said, his voice heavy with foreboding. "We have an issue. A team of high-powered corporate attorneys from the Sterling & Croft law firm just arrived with a signed judicial order from a circuit court judge. They’ve bypassed standard processing, posted a five-hundred-thousand-dollar cash bond for Ethan Callahan, and they are legally demanding the immediate return of all his personal effects—including his briefcase."
