Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the House of Armstrong-7

The chaos inside the ballroom reached a deafening crescendo. Bankers were hastily pulling up their portfolios, verifying whether their own firms had exposure to the collapsing Armstrong assets. Reporters swarmed the aisles, shouting questions at Christopher, who stood frozen like a deer caught in high-beam headlights.
"Mr. Armstrong! Is it true you embezzled forty-five million dollars?!"
"Mr. Armstrong! Can you comment on your wife being the secret owner of Durham Global?!"
Paige tried to slip backward toward the exit, her designer handbag clutched defensively against her chest. But two burly corporate security guards in sleek black suits materialized from the shadows, blocking her path with unyielding physical presence.
"Where do you think you're going, Miss Albright?" one of the guards asked coldly. "The internal compliance audit isn't finished yet."
Gertrude was shaking with blind, incandescent fury. She shoved her way through the panicked crowd, marching right up to the base of the grand staircase, pointing a trembling, diamond-ringed finger up at Valerie.
"You ungrateful, scheming little rat!" Gertrude shrieked, her voice cutting through the din of the room. "You tricked my son! You trapped him with your little peasant games! You're nothing without this family! Christopher made you! He pulled you out of the gutter!"
Valerie didn't flinch. She didn't even blink. She simply looked down at her mother-in-law with the detached, clinical curiosity of a scientist observing a particularly pathetic insect under a microscope.
"Gertrude," Valerie said softly, her microphone amplifying the single word across the entire hall. "For seven years, I listened to you lecture me about breeding, class, and financial superiority. I let you treat my kitchen like your personal estate. I let you belittle every breath I took under your roof."
She stepped closer to the edge of the stage, looking down at the older woman.
"Do you know who actually paid for the shimmering silver evening gown you're wearing tonight? Durham Global. Do you know who funded the winter estate in Palm Beach where you host your pathetic bridge clubs? Durham Global. Every stitch of clothing on your body, every drop of champagne in your glass, every breath of air you've drawn in luxury for the last decade was financed by the woman you called a peasant."
Gertrude gasped, staggering backward as though she had been physically struck across the face. Her mouth opened and closed silently, her face turning a mottled shade of purple.
Tabitha rushed forward to catch her mother before she collapsed. "Mom! Don't listen to her! She's lying! She's mentally unstable!"
"Is she?"
A new voice echoed from the side entrance of the ballroom. Arthur Sterling stepped forward, holding a thick leather-bound folio embossed with the Armstrong family crest.
"I can personally verify every transaction," Arthur announced, opening the folio to display certified legal documents. "Furthermore, the Naples waterfront estate, the trust funds, the vehicles, and all familial assets are legally registered under a single private holding trust—solely owned and operated by Madam Chairwoman."
Arthur looked directly at Gertrude and Tabitha. "In legal terms, Mrs. Armstrong, you are currently trespassing on property owned by the woman you just insulted. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
The final pillar of the Armstrong family's aristocratic delusion shattered into dust. Tabitha burst into hysterical tears, burying her face in her mother's shoulder. Gertrude looked as though she had just received a terminal medical diagnosis.
Down in the front row, Christopher finally broke his paralyzed silence. He stumbled forward, ignoring the cameras, ignoring the reporters, ignoring the debris of his ruined life. He staggered to the base of the stage, reaching up toward his wife with desperate, trembling hands.
"Valerie..." he choked out, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Valerie, please... look at me. It was a mistake. Paige... Paige tricked me! She seduced me, she manipulated the accounts behind my back! I swear to God, Val, I love you. We've been married for seven years! We're husband and wife!"
Valerie looked down at him. There was no anger in her eyes. There was no grief. There was only a vast, chilling emptiness—the complete absence of feeling for a man who had proved himself entirely hollow.
"Husband?" Valerie repeated quietly. "You told me tonight that I belonged in the kitchen. You told me I was a charity case who lived in a tiny rented apartment before you rescued me."
Christopher squeezed his eyes shut, a tear carving a hot path through his makeup-powdered cheek. "I was drunk on ambition, Val! I didn't know! If you just give me another chance—"
"You never loved me, Christopher," Valerie interrupted smoothly. "You loved the mirror you thought I provided. You loved the fact that you could look down on me to elevate your own pathetic insecurities."
She turned away from him, looking out over the silent, awestruck crowd of global elites.
"Arthur," Valerie said clearly.
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman?" the managing partner responded instantly.
"Escort Mr. Armstrong and his associates out of my building. And ensure our legal team files full criminal indictments for embezzlement against both him and Miss Albright before midnight."

"Right away, Madam," Arthur replied.
As four security guards moved in to physically haul Christopher away from the stage, his screams echoed desperately across the marble hall. But Valerie didn't look back. She turned on her heel, her midnight-blue velvet gown sweeping gracefully behind her as she walked away from the stage, leaving the collapsed empire of the Armstrong family buried in her wake.
