Chapter 2 - The Drive to Miami-2

Inside the sleek confines of Christopher’s custom-built Mercedes-Benz Maybach, the atmosphere was thick with self-congratulatory triumph. Paige Albright rested her manicured hand delicately on Christopher’s thigh, her laughter ringing out like crystal chimes as she recounted a recent slight against one of their junior competitors.

"I still can't believe the board actually approved our expansion budget," Paige purred, her eyes scanning the neon-lit Miami skyline as they crossed the MacArthur Causeway toward the exclusive oceanfront museum. "With Durham Global backing us, we're practically untouchable. Imagine what my father will say when he sees us on the front page of the financial journal tomorrow."

Christopher smiled, a tight, arrogant curl of his lips. He checked his limited-edition watch—the one he always bragged about buying with his first big commission. "Durham Global doesn't just back us, Paige. They rely on us. Their regional director told me last week that out of all their global portfolios, Armstrong Enterprises represents their most stable asset in the American southeast."

He felt invincible. For years, he had carried the crushing weight of secret debt, supply chain failures, and near-bankruptcy, only for mysterious capital injections to magically appear whenever disaster loomed. Christopher had convinced himself it was his own financial genius—his raw, undeniable business acumen—that kept the venture capital flowing. He had even convinced his mother and sister that he was a self-made corporate titan.

"And what about Valerie?" Paige asked with a mock-innocent pout, though her eyes gleamed with malicious satisfaction. "Won't she be upset sitting all alone in that big, empty house while her husband dances at the event of the year?"

"Valerie doesn't understand the real world," Christopher dismissed instantly, waving a hand dismissively. "She’s a relic from my struggling days. Sweet, quiet, but utterly incapable of handling high society. She belongs in the kitchen, Paige. Not among billionaires."

As the Maybach glided past the velvet ropes of the museum entrance, dozens of camera flashes erupted against the tinted windows. Paparazzi and financial journalists swarmed the vehicle, eager to snap photos of the city's most rising corporate power couple. Christopher puffed out his chest, stepping out first to gracefully extend a hand to Paige.

The flashbulbs blinded them momentarily as they walked the red carpet. Reporters shouted questions from behind the metal barricades.

"Mr. Armstrong! Is it true Durham Global is doubling their investment in your firm tonight?"

"Mr. Armstrong! Who is this stunning companion by your side?"

Christopher paused, flashing his signature million-dollar smile for the cameras. "Durham Global and Armstrong Enterprises share a vision of absolute market dominance," he declared into a thrust microphone. "And as for my companion tonight, Paige Albright represents the brilliant future of corporate relations in our sector."

Paige leaned into his shoulder, soaking in the adoration of the press. They swept through the grand oak doors of the museum into a world of soaring ceilings, classical marble pillars, and hundreds of the nation’s wealthiest elites dressed in designer gowns and bespoke tuxedos.

Yet, as Christopher accepted a flute of vintage champagne from a passing waiter, a faint, nagging chill crawled up the back of his neck.

He didn't notice the sudden hush that fell over the VIP section near the stage. He didn't see the regional director of Durham Global—a man who usually treated Christopher with casual indifference—suddenly snap to rigid attention, staring past him toward the grand entrance with an expression of sheer, unadulterated terror.

Christopher simply took a sip of his champagne, turned to Paige, and whispered, "Welcome to our empire, darling. Tonight, we take it all."
