Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Begins-6

The silence in the ballroom was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning units sounded like a roaring jet engine. Every eye in the room followed the trajectory of Valerie’s gaze, shifting from the stage down to the front row where Christopher Armstrong stood frozen like a statue carved from ice.
Christopher felt as though the oxygen had been entirely sucked from his lungs. His chest burned, his palms were slick with cold sweat, and the brilliant Miami ballroom seemed to spin violently around him.
"For the past seven years," Valerie continued, her voice clear, melodic, and chillingly devoid of emotion, "Durham Global Holdings has quietly sustained a number of struggling enterprises in the American southeast through private venture partnerships. Among them is Armstrong Enterprises."
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Business reporters frantically began typing notes onto their tablets.
"When we first injected capital into Armstrong Enterprises," Valerie said, her eyes never leaving her husband's pale face, "it was intended to rescue a fledgling startup with innovative potential. We provided the seed money. We provided the operational loans. We provided the safety net that kept the company afloat through every single crisis."
Beside Christopher, Paige found her voice, though it trembled violently. "She’s insane," Paige whispered loudly enough for the nearby journalists to hear. "She’s just... she’s an unhinged employee! Security, remove her!"
Not a single security guard moved. In fact, the two private guards standing nearest to Paige took a sharp step backward, their faces rigid with absolute terror at the mere sound of Paige speaking out of turn against the Chairwoman.
Christopher couldn't even look at Paige. His mind was racing through a horrifying labyrinth of realization. The seed money... the safety net... the mysterious venture capital that always arrived just before bankruptcy. He had spent years bragging to investors, to reporters, to his mother, that he was a self-made financial titan who built his empire from scratch.
And all along, the billionaire backer holding his leash—and his life—was the wife he treated like a maid.
"Unfortunately," Valerie continued, her tone sharpening like a blade being drawn from a scimitar, "recent internal audits have revealed a disturbing pattern of financial misconduct within the Armstrong portfolio. Specifically, systematic embezzlement, fraudulent asset transfers, and deliberate corporate sabotage directed against Durham Global’s subsidiary accounts."
Gertrude gasped, clutching her pearls. "How dare she! Christopher, do something! Call your lawyers! Have this impostor arrested!"
Christopher remained paralyzed. He couldn't move a muscle. He knew—with a sickening, visceral certainty—that if he opened his mouth, he would vomit.
On stage, Valerie pressed a button on the podium console. Instantly, the massive LED screens behind her flickered to life. The glowing graphics of the Atlantic Legacy Gala vanished, replaced by a glaring, unsparing financial spreadsheet.
High-resolution bank routing numbers, offshore shell company registries in the Cayman Islands, and wire transfer logs were projected across the giant screens for four hundred of the nation's most elite business leaders to see.
At the top of the spreadsheet, clearly visible in bold, glowing letters, was a corporate entity registered under a private maiden name: Albright Holdings LLC.
Paige Albright let out a choked, strangled cry. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse in a burgundy gown. Those routing numbers weren't just internal ledgers; they were the exact paper trail of the funds she and Christopher had been siphoning away over the past eighteen months, preparing for their planned escape to Zurich.
"Over the past eighteen months," Valerie stated calmly, pointing a slender finger toward the towering screens, "directors of Armstrong Enterprises diverted over forty-five million dollars of Durham Global capital into private offshore accounts designed to bankrupt the parent company from within."
The ballroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Reporters shouted overlapping questions. Flashbulbs strobed frantically, blinding Christopher and Paige with white-hot illumination. Prominent CEOs backed away from Christopher as though he carried a plague, horrified to be associated with a disgraced embezzler.
Valerie lowered her hand, her gaze locking onto Christopher with a look of supreme, chilling finality.
"Article 9 of our investment charter dictates an immediate, unconditional asset freeze and criminal prosecution for any entity attempting to defraud Durham Global Holdings," Valerie declared into the microphone.
She pressed her thumb firmly down onto the obsidian card resting on the podium.
A soft, electronic chime echoed through the ballroom audio system—followed instantly by the sound of hundreds of high-frequency notification alerts vibrating simultaneously across the smartphones of every banker, investor, and executive in the room.

Christopher’s phone buzzed violently in his jacket pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen flashed a bright red warning banner from his corporate banking app: ACCOUNT FROZEN. ALL ASSETS SEIZED BY DURHAM GLOBAL HOLDINGS. ACCESS DENIED.
His empire was gone. In less than ten seconds, everything he owned had vanished into the ether.
