Chapter 4: The Arrest

Chapter 4: The Arrest
The ambulance arrived first.
Paramedics rushed in, taking Sophie from my arms.
“I’m staying with her,” I said immediately.
One of them nodded.
“Let’s go.”
As they lifted her onto the stretcher, she reached for me weakly.
“Mommy… don’t go…”
“I’m right here,” I whispered. “I’m not leaving.”
Behind us, chaos erupted.
The officers placed Preston in handcuffs.
He resisted—not violently, but verbally.
“This is insane,” he snapped. “She’s my niece. You can’t do this to me.”
“Sir,” one officer said firmly, “we have video evidence of assault and falsification of a theft accusation.”
My father stepped forward suddenly.
“You’re making a mistake,” he said. “He’s under stress. It was a family misunderstanding.”
The officer didn’t even look at him.
“Step back.”

My mother froze.
For the first time, she had no words.
As Preston was led away, he turned his head toward me.
Just once.
His eyes burned—not with regret…
But with hatred.
“You did this,” he said quietly. “You ruined everything.”
I held Sophie’s hand tighter.
“No,” I said. “You did.”
May you like
The doors closed.
And he was gone.
