CHAPTER 26: THE STING AT NORTH PIER
The federal intervention was immediate, but Helena Sterling was a ghost who knew how to vanish before the net could close.
By the time Bennett’s team breached the lobby, Helena and her primary security detail had retreated through the old utility tunnels beneath the foundation building. They left behind two hired operatives, both pinned to the floor by Bennett’s tactical squad.
Our father was alive, sitting on the stairs, his breathing ragged but his chest uninjured.
"She didn't get the ledger, Evelyn," he whispered, looking up at me as I emerged from the vault.
"I kept it hidden in my jacket."
Agent Bennett walked into the lobby, adjusting his tactical vest, his face grim under the bright halogen flashlights.
"We missed her by ninety seconds," Bennett said, looking at the open tunnel grate.
"But she left her satellite uplink active. We’ve tracked her destination."
"Where?" Hannah asked, her fingers already pulling up the regional maritime grid on her tablet.
"The North Pier shipping terminal," Bennett revealed.
"She has a private cargo vessel registered under a Liberian flag. It’s scheduled to clear the harbor in thirty minutes."
"If she gets into international waters, the metadata won't matter anymore. She can control the offshore accounts from anywhere on earth."
Hannah looked at me, a cold, calculating determination returning to her eyes.
