CHAPTER 32: THE RECONSTRUCTED HEARTH

CHAPTER 32: THE RECONSTRUCTED HEARTH
The old family home that had been sold to the bankruptcy court was purchased by an anonymous buyer two years later.
That buyer was the foundation.
We didn't turn it back into a luxury mansion. We tore down the dark velvet curtains, replaced the heavy mahogany furniture with wide, light-filled oak tables, and painted the walls a clean, crisp white. The dining room where Sophie had once been pushed and blamed was transformed into a sunlit art studio for children recovering from trauma.
One warm summer afternoon, our father sat in a rocking chair on the new back porch, looking out at the rose garden.
He was older now, his breathing a bit slower, his shoulder slightly stiff from the scars of the pier. But his eyes were completely peaceful. The burden of the 2006 lie had been entirely erased from his features.
Sophie ran across the green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy through the sprinklers, her bright, musical laughter filling the air.

She stopped near his chair, laughing as she placed a wild lavender bloom into his shirt pocket.
"For your collection, Grandpa," she said, kissing his weathered cheek.
He smiled, a tear of pure gratitude sliding down his face as he held her hand.
"You are a beautiful girl, Sophie," he whispered.
"You look exactly like your grandmother when she was happy."
Hannah and I stood by the glass doors, watching them.
"We actually did it, Evy," Hannah murmured, leaning her head against my shoulder.
May you like
"No," I corrected gently, wrapping my arm around her waist.
"The loyalty did it, sister. We just stayed close enough to let it heal."
