Chapter 4 - The Weight of the Crown-4-

The atmosphere in the solarium flipped instantly from predatory triumph to tense standoff. Marco’s hand hovered near Emma’s hair, his fingers twitching as he stared up at the high gallery windows where the red dots mapped out a silent, deadly grid across his men.

"You're bluffing," Marco spat, though a sheen of cold sweat had broken out across his forehead. "Your personal security detail was cleared out by my compliance audit yesterday morning."

"Compliance," Alessandro repeated, the word dripping with venom. "A clever word for treason. But you forgot one simple rule of the Chicago underworld, cousin: money talks, but blood stays in the family. And my blood runs deeper than your board resolutions."

With a sharp snap of Alessandro’s fingers, the heavy glass doors at the opposite end of the solarium shattered. Shards of crystal rained down onto the tile as a fresh wave of armed men—loyalists wearing the Moretti crest pin on their lapels—poured into the room, cutting off Marco’s escape route.

"Drop your weapons," Alessandro ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

Marco’s men looked nervously toward their leader, their grips loosening on their firearms. Marco slowly stood up, glaring down at his cousin with pure hatred. "You think this makes you a king, Alessandro? You're chained to a chair. You're a cripple sitting on a throne of ash."

"A throne of ash is still a throne," Alessandro replied softly. "And you’re standing on my floor without permission."

Without another word, Alessandro gestured to his guards. In seconds, Marco and his men were disarmed, forced to their knees on the cold marble. The swiftness of the counter-coup was breathtaking. It was clear Alessandro had known about the betrayal long before the laboratory report had crossed his desk; he had simply been waiting for Marco to step fully into the trap.

Once the room had been cleared of the intruders, save for a few guards standing watch at the doors, the heavy silence returned. Alessandro turned his wheelchair around, facing me and Emma.

I was still shaking, holding my daughter so tightly that my arms ached. "Mr. Moretti... please. Let us go. I won't say a word to anyone. I swear it."

Alessandro looked at me for a long, agonizing moment. The fierce, terrifying mob boss had receded, leaving behind a tired man whose eyes carried the weight of a thousand silent battles.

"Sarah," he said softly, ignoring my plea for immediate dismissal. "You brought your daughter into the lion’s den. And she walked right up to the beast with a broken cookie."

"She didn't know—"

"No, she didn't. But children have an instinct for truth that adults lose somewhere along the way." He looked down at Emma, who had finally peeked out from my shoulder, her big eyes blinking at him. "She said she would take care of me."

"It was just baby talk," I insisted, desperate to defuse the situation.

"In this house, baby talk is more honest than anything my lawyers say," Alessandro replied, maneuvering his chair closer. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, though it didn't contain jewelry. It contained a key. "You’re fired from the cleaning staff, Sarah."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. "No—please, I need this job. The rent, the agency—"

"Quiet down," he interrupted calmly. "You’re fired from cleaning. But I am appointing you as my personal estate secretary and resident guardian. Salary tripled. Full benefits. Suite on the third floor with private security."

I stared at him, completely stunned. "I... I don't understand."

"You have nowhere safe to go, Sarah. Marco's associates are still out there, and anyone who stepped foot in this room today is a target. You stay here. You keep your daughter safe. And in exchange..." He looked at Emma, who reached out a small hand and poked the armrest of his wheelchair. "...you remind me what it feels like to be treated like a human being instead of a monster."
