Chapter 13 - Secrets in the Blood-13-

Alessandro stopped his wheelchair a few feet away, his steel-gray eyes scanning the open metal box resting on the oak table in front of me. The air in the archive grew instantly heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that felt thicker than the stone walls surrounding us.
"I... I was looking for the 1998 tax ledgers," I stammered, my voice sounding impossibly small in the vaulted room. "The panel gave way. I didn't mean to—"
"You found it," Alessandro interrupted. It wasn't a question. His voice was completely devoid of anger, replaced by a hollow, haunting resignation.
I swallowed hard, looking down at the exposed documents on the table. "Julian isn't just your cousin, is he?"
Alessandro sighed, closing his eyes for a brief moment as if bracing himself to carry a weight he had borne alone for years. "No. He’s my twin brother."
The silence in the room stretched for an eternity. The betrayal, the bitter corporate war, the assassination attempt—everything took on a terrifying, tragic new light.
"Why?" I asked softly. "Why would your father separate you? Why make you enemies?"
"Our father was a monster wrapped in an impeccably tailored suit," Alessandro said, opening his eyes and rolling closer to the table. "When we were born, the syndicate was weaker, split by internal faction wars. Our father was told by his advisors that an heir raised openly would be a target for rival bosses. But twin heirs? That would invite total annihilation. So, he paid off a corrupt hospital administrator to give one of us away to a wealthy, ambitious corporate family—the Vances."
He reached out, his pale fingers resting gently on the edge of the old birth certificate.
"Julian was raised believing he was better than us, born to elite society, while I was groomed to be the butcher of the Lake Forest empire. When we grew up, the rivalry wasn't just business, Sarah. It was in our blood. He spent his entire life trying to prove he was the true son of the Moretti dynasty, even if it meant murdering his own flesh and blood to take the throne."
I stepped closer, instinctively placing my hand over his broad shoulder. The heavy wool of his sweater was warm, but his body beneath it was rigid with old pain.
"You knew," I whispered. "When you investigated the crash... you knew he was behind it."
"I suspected," Alessandro replied, looking up at me, his gaze raw and unguarded. "And that's why I couldn't pull the trigger on him. That’s why I let the feds take him instead of doing what my father would have done." He let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "Turns out, I’m not as heartless as the legends say."
"You're not heartless at all, Alessandro," I said, my voice steady and clear in the damp dark. "If you were, you wouldn't have let a three-year-old girl in a yellow sweater feed you half a broken cookie and change your entire world."

Alessandro looked at me for a long time, the shadows of the archive seeming to recede beneath the sudden, fierce warmth in his eyes.
"She saved me, Sarah," he whispered, covering my hand where it rested on his shoulder with his own. "And so did you."
