Chapter 12 - The Whispers in the Archive-12-

The renovation project became a quiet sanctuary for us during the lingering winter months. Emma took her new job as "Lead Interior Designer" very seriously, demanding that every room include a designated corner for Mr. Rabbit and a basket of premium butter cookies within arm's reach of any chair Alessandro might occupy.

Yet, as the physical estate began to transform, a strange discovery in the mansion's deepest archives threatened to upend everything we thought we knew about the Moretti family history.

It happened on a Friday evening. Mrs. Halloway had taken Emma down to the estate kitchens to bake cinnamon rolls, leaving me alone in the subterranean basement archive—a vaulted stone room housing decades of ledgers, photographs, and legal documents dating back to Alessandro’s grandfather.

My task was simple: catalog the historical shipping records for tax compliance. But as I pulled a heavy leather ledger from the back shelf, a hidden wooden panel at the rear of the cabinet gave way with a soft click.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I reached into the dark recess behind the shelf and pulled out a small, dust-covered metal lockbox.

It wasn't locked.

Inside sat a single manila envelope marked with a red wax seal bearing the original Moretti family crest. Across the front, written in sharp, elegant cursive, were the words: For Alessandro’s Eyes Only.

My hands hovered over the envelope. I knew I should put it back. I knew prying into family secrets was a dangerous game in this house. But as I slid the flap open and pulled out the faded documents inside, the first page froze the blood in my veins.

It wasn't a business ledger. It was a birth certificate.

And a DNA report.

Dated twenty-six years ago, the medical document detailed a secret adoption and a bloodline verification test involving two infants born in the same Chicago maternity ward on the exact same snowy night in March.

One was Alessandro Moretti.

The other was Julian Vance.

My breath caught in my throat as I read the final conclusion of the forensic pathologist’s attached memo: The genetic markers confirm they are fraternal twins, separated at birth under mysterious circumstances orchestrated by the senior Moretti estate.

Before I could process the staggering implications of what I was holding, the heavy iron door of the archive creaked open.

I spun around, dropping the papers back into the box just as Alessandro’s wheelchair rolled silently into the dim light of the stone room.

"Sarah," he said, his voice echoing softly off the damp walls. "What are you doing down here in the dark?"
