Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

5

Through the wide-angle camera monitor, I watched the elevator doors at the end of the hallway slide open with a quiet, metallic hiss.

Four men in sharp, charcoal-grey tactical suits stepped out onto the carpeted floor. They didn't carry weapons openly, but their rigid, military posture and the clear earpieces curled behind their ears signaled immediate, lethal authority.

Leading them was Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division—a tall, stern man with silvering hair and eyes like flint.

Eleanor turned around slowly, her plastic shopping bag slipping from her numb fingers and scattering old bank receipts across the carpet. Tessa let out a strangled, high-pitched whimpering sound, shrinking back against my apartment door as if she could merge with the solid wood.

“Eleanor Vance? Tessa Vance?” Agent Marcus said, his voice flat, professional, and entirely devoid of mercy.

Eleanor’s lips trembled. “Who... who are you?”

Agent Marcus pulled a black leather credentials folder from his inner jacket pocket, displaying a gleaming gold federal badge. “Special Agent Marcus, Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have a federal warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.”

Tessa dropped to the floor, her blue dress pooling around her as she began to wail hysterically. “No! No! It was all my mother! I didn't know anything about the money! I swear I didn't know!”

“Shut up, Tessa!” Eleanor roared, turning on her daughter with sudden, venomous fury, her hands clawing at Tessa’s shoulders. “You selfish little brat! You spent thirty million dollars of that money on yachts, designer clothes, and European vacations! You knew exactly where every dime came from!”

“I didn't! I didn't!” Tessa screamed back, kicking her legs out and striking Eleanor in the shins. “You told me it was my inheritance! You told me Maya was just our servant!”

The two officers behind Agent Marcus stepped forward efficiently, stepping between the fighting women. Within seconds, thick steel handcuffs were snapped around Eleanor’s and Tessa’s wrists.

Agent Marcus walked past the screaming women, stopping directly in front of my apartment door. He raised his hand and knocked three times.

I unlocked the digital security system, pulled the heavy door open, and stepped into the hallway, holding little Leo securely in my arms.

The hallway was filled with the deafening sound of Tessa’s frantic weeping and Eleanor’s low, bitter curses.

Agent Marcus looked at me, his sharp features softening into a look of profound respect. He bowed his head slightly. “Ms. Vance. The operational phase is complete. Every offshore asset has been secured, and the federal grand jury has issued a twenty-four-count indictment against both defendants.”

I looked over Agent Marcus’s shoulder at Eleanor.

My mother—the woman who had spent twenty years belittling me, slapping me, forcing me to live on crumbs while she raised her favored daughter on stolen millions—was now standing in steel cuffs, her cheap coat rumpled, her face contorted in pathetic, ugly despair.

She looked at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, wild plea for mercy. “Maya... please. Tell them it was a mistake. Tell them you gave us permission to use the trust fund. You’re my daughter... you can't let them take me to prison!”

I looked down at the tiny, innocent baby in my arms, then raised my eyes to meet Eleanor’s gaze.

“I am David and Sarah Vance’s daughter,” I said, my voice cutting through her frantic pleas with absolute clarity. “And you are nothing to me.”
