Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

My mother’s hand, which had been raised to strike me a second time, froze mid-air. Her face drained of all color, turning a sallow, papery gray. The fierce, dictatorial rage in her eyes gave way to something far more sinister: sheer, unadulterated horror.
“What... what did you just say?” she whispered, her voice trembling so violently her fake pearl earrings rattled against her neck.
“You heard me, Eleanor,” I said, dropping the word 'Mom' for the very first time in my life. “You spent twenty years telling me that I was the black sheep, the unwanted obligation, the burden you so graciously took in out of the kindness of your heart. You made me feel like every crumb of bread I ate in your house was a debt I had to repay.”
I stepped forward, forcing both Eleanor and Tessa back toward the elevator doors.
“You made me work eighty hours a week. You forced me to pay off this condo under your legal supervision when I was twenty, convincing me that I owed Tessa her future because of a 'childhood accident' that was supposedly my fault.”
Tessa’s hands were shaking so hard she could barely hold her phone. “Maya, stop it! You’re insane! You’re making things up because you’re jealous that Julian was going to marry me!”
“Julian didn't dump you because of a personal disagreement, Tessa,” I said, turning my gaze to my sister. “Julian dumped you three days ago because I sent his father’s legal team the offshore wire transfers. The sixty million dollars that went missing from the Fairview Trust Fund twenty years ago didn't vanish in a hospital fire. It was funneled into a private holding account set up under the name of a newborn baby.”
Tessa choked on a gasp, clutching her blue dress to her chest as if it could shield her from the truth.
“My real parents didn't die in a car crash, did they, Eleanor?” I demanded, turning back to my mother. “They were the primary trustees of the Fairview Medical Research Fund. And the baby in that stroller... little Leo... he isn't my adopted son, is he?”
Eleanor’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She looked around the hallway in a panic, suddenly aware that two neighbors down the hall were standing near their doors, recording the entire confrontation on their smartphones.
“Get inside,” Eleanor spat through gritted teeth, trying to push past me into the apartment. “We are not discussing this out here!”
“You step one foot across my threshold,” I said, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen, “and the silent alarm I installed yesterday will ping the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division. Agent Marcus is currently waiting for my call.”
The mention of the FBI acted like an invisible wall, halting both of them in their tracks.
Tessa began to weep hysterically, dropping to her knees right beside her eight-thousand-dollar unworn wedding dress. The pristine white silk spilled over the dirty hallway carpet like ruined snow. “Mom! Do something! She’s going to ruin everything! Julian’s father said if the money isn't returned by Friday, they’re filing federal charges against me!”
“Shut up, Tessa!” Eleanor screamed, turning on her favorite daughter for the first time in her life. “Keep your mouth shut!”
I looked down at them—the pristine, golden sister who had spent her life eating at fine restaurants and wearing designer clothes bought with stolen money, and the cold, calculating mother who had struck me across the face to protect a colossal lie.
“Eight years ago, when I turned eighteen, you forced me to sign a legal co-guarantor document for this condo,” I said, stepping backward and reaching for the handle of Leo’s stroller. “You told me it was to ensure I had a place to live while I paid back my 'debts' to the family. But what you actually did was use my legal identity to buy this entire building’s developer shares.”
I pulled the stroller into my apartment, keeping my eyes fixed on the two women standing in the hallway.

“This condo isn't just paid off, Eleanor. As of eight o'clock this morning, the entire twelve-story building belongs to me. And as the sole legal owner, I am issuing an immediate notice of criminal trespass.”
