Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Fairview

3

I wheeled Leo inside and slammed the heavy reinforced door shut. The digital lock engaged with a sharp, heavy thunk, followed by three electronic beeps signaling that the high-grade security bolts had slid into place.

Through the thick wood, I could hear Eleanor pounding frantically with her fists, her muffled screams echoing down the hall: “Maya! Open this door right now! You don't know what you're doing! They will kill us all if that money isn't moved!”

I ignored her. I walked into the warm, sunlit living room of my apartment.

The condo was immaculate. Minimalist furniture, polished concrete floors, and wide floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the shimmering city skyline below. Every single piece of furniture, every light fixture, every floorboard had been paid for with my sweat, my pain, and my sleepless nights.

I looked down at little Leo. He had woken up from his nap, his giant, bright hazel eyes staring up at me with innocence and trust. He reached his tiny hands out from beneath the blue blanket, letting out a soft, happy gurgle.

I lifted him into my arms, pressing my face against his soft cheek, smelling the clean scent of baby lotion and fresh linen.

“They’re never going to touch you, Leo,” I whispered softly, my eyes burning with unshed tears. “I promise you. They took my childhood, but they will never take yours.”

My phone vibrated in my back pocket. I pulled it out and saw a secure, encrypted message flashing on the screen.

[UNKNOWN NUMBER]: The package has been verified. The forensic audit from 2006 matches the offshore accounts in Nassau. We have a green light. Are you ready to execute the second phase?

I walked over to my desk in the corner of the room, holding Leo securely against my hip. On the desk lay three thick black binders filled with thousands of pages of financial records, bank statements, forged signatures, and birth certificates.

The truth was far more horrifying than a simple case of corporate embezzlement.

Twenty years ago, my biological parents, Dr. David and Sarah Vance, were the lead researchers at Fairview Memorial Hospital. They had secured a sixty-million-dollar grant to develop a groundbreaking gene-therapy treatment for rare pediatric illnesses.

Eleanor was the chief administrative director of the hospital at the time. Her husband, my late 'uncle' Arthur, was a gambling addict who owed tens of millions of dollars to an international criminal syndicate operating out of South America.

To save Arthur’s life, Eleanor had orchestrated a catastrophic plot. She tampered with the main gas lines in the hospital’s research wing, causing a massive explosion that burned the facility to the ground. My parents were declared dead in the fire, their research notes destroyed, and the sixty-million-dollar research fund mysteriously vanished from the hospital’s master accounts.

But my parents hadn't died in the explosion.

They had survived the fire, severely injured, and were kept hidden in an unregistered private medical facility while Eleanor used forged power-of-attorney documents to drain their estate. When my mother finally passed away six months ago from her injuries, she left behind a secret child—little Leo—and a hidden flash drive containing the full truth of what Eleanor had done.

Eleanor hadn't taken me in out of pity. She had adopted me to maintain control over my biological parents' remaining trust funds, using me as a legal shield to sign fraudulent loan documents whenever the syndicate came collecting.

And Tessa? Tessa had been in on it for the last three years. She had used the stolen Fairview money to buy her way into high society, purchasing her eight-thousand-dollar wedding dress and financing her lavish lifestyle while I lived on cheap ramen in a tiny room, working eighty hours a week to pay off the very property they intended to steal from me.

I tapped my phone screen, replying to the encrypted message:

MAYA: I’m ready. Freeze every account connected to the Whitaker Development Group. Let Eleanor and Tessa feel what it’s like to have nothing.
