Chapter 5 - The Fire Ax Override-5

The industrial storm over the Oakhill district finally broke by the time the clock on the corporate tower’s master diagnostic panel struck midnight. The heavy, grey rain clouds rolled away toward the mountains, leaving a brilliant, cloudless expanse of cold gold twilight that filtered through the shattered terrace windows, painting the boardroom floorboards in a soft, surreal light.
I sat in an oversized leather executive chair near the corner fireplace, a warm cup of herbal tea resting between my hands, my wool travel coat draped over my knees. Sophia had finally fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep on the velvet sofa beside my pylon, her small arms still wrapped securely around her gray stuffed rabbit, her face completely bright, radiant, and free of the terrifying anxiety that had broken my heart at the reception desk.
"The federal grand jury just finalized the primary indictments against the Vance family syndicate, Viv," Victor said, stepping back into the boardroom from the communication annex down the hall. He had taken off his heavy trench coat, his gray eyes bright and clear of the intense tactical focus that had ruled his face during the raid. "Senator Thomas Vance accepted a non-parole plea agreement twenty minutes ago in Washington. In exchange for a full confession regarding the land manipulation rings and the municipal bribery networks, the judge has ordered the permanent liquidation of their entire North American asset pool."
"And Dominic?" I asked, taking a slow, quiet sip of the tea.
"He’s looking at thirty-five years at the federal maximum-security facility in Terre Haute, with zero possibility of parole," Victor said, his voice dropping into a gentle, brotherly baritone as he sat down on the marble hearth beside my chair. "The corporate assets of his development firm have been permanently seized under the RICO statutes, and the entire eight-five-million-dollar fund has been channeled into a new state-level public trust fund named The Sophia Sterling Foundation for Forensic Advocacy and Child Security."

I looked out through the massive glass windows of the penthouse toward the winding silver ribbons of the shipping canal below us, a deep, profound sense of relief softening the hard lines around my eyes. The invisible cage of marital deceit, corporate extortion, and quiet terror that Dominic and Chloe had built around my daughter's childhood had finally, permanently shattered, leaving nothing but the open sky ahead.
"The machine is completely broken, Viv," Victor whispered, his large hand wrapping gently around my fingers. "The secrets are all dragged out of the concrete vaults. You can finally come back home into the light."
