Chapter 2 - The Floor of Shadows-2

The private executive lift blocks on the north wall of the pavilion hissed open with a sharp, pneumatic release of compressed air, their electronic safety seals breaking as the central grid power died down to a low-trickle backup frequency.
I didn't wait for Chloe’s security guards to recover their coordination. I scooped Sophia into my left arm, my fingers wrapping firmly around the leather straps of my handbag where the master corporate keys to the Sterling Family Trust family repository were housed behind an unmappable cryptographic partition. We stepped into the silver elevator cabin, Marco—my third brother Victor’s chief extraction specialist, who had quietly stepped out from the shadow of a marble pillar near the vending machines—blocking the door frame behind us with his broad shoulders.
"The forty-second floor is fully occupied, Miss Vivienne," Marco said, his voice a hard baritone of absolute tactical focus as the lift ascended through the core of the skyscraper with a rapid, mechanical whirring sound. "Dominic has the senior board representatives from the Eastern European syndicate locked inside the main boardroom annex. They were preparing to finalize the cross-border merger contracts before the midnight bell."
"He wanted the land deeds, Marco," I said, my eyes tracking the glowing blue digital floor indicator as it raced past the twenty-first level. "He didn't just file the divorce briefs at my reception desk because he wanted space. He needed the Vance family—sorry, the Sterling trust boundaries—cleared under a fraudulent civil waiver to release the municipal grants for his riverfront development zone. He thought my father's estate was an empty corporate box he could re-zone using Chloe's forged digital signature tokens."
The elevator dinged with a sharp, clinical tone that resonated through the narrow space. Forty-second floor. Executive Suite Alpha.
The doors slid open onto a vast forest of frosted glass walls, custom cherry-wood vanity consoles, and high-end modern chandeliers that cast a pale, surreal light across the packed crowd of investors. On a normal Friday night, this floor would be a hive of celebratory luxury, filled with hundreds of analysts drinking expensive champagne and posing for social media journalists near the wine pavilion.
But tonight, the atmosphere had frozen into an absolute, suffocating bottleneck.

Standing in the center of the grand boardroom lounge, a crystal champagne flute held frozen halfway to his mouth, his tailored charcoal suit jacket immaculate but his face completely bloodless beneath his perfectly styled hair, was my husband, Dominic.
Beside him stood a younger woman dressed in a stunning emerald-green silk gown, her black hair spilling over her shoulder, her manicured red nails sliding possessively down Dominic’s sleeve as she smiled at an older couple standing near the fireplace. Standing between them, holding a small high-end electronic diagnostic tablet, was a seven-year-old boy whose curly blond hair and wide blue eyes perfectly traced the physical lineage of Dominic’s hidden family.
