Chapter 9 - The Interrogation Room Mirror-9

Six months later.
The air inside the interrogation suite at the Federal Building in downtown Chicago was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, cold espresso, and the heavy, undeniable weight of absolute justice. The room was a stark, sterile cube of white concrete and brushed steel, dominated by a massive, one-way observation mirror that took up an entire wall.
Sitting on the opposite side of the ballistic glass was my ex-husband, Mark.
He wore a bright orange federal inmate jumpsuit, his hair unstyled and graying, his hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains that clinked dismally with his every minor movement. The handsome, arrogant corporate executive who had bought an Aston Martin with his son's blood money had completely vanished, replaced by a broken, gaunt shadow of a man waiting for his final sentencing hearing.
I stood behind the one-way mirror in the observation room, my arms crossed over my tailored dark gray wool suit jacket, my eyes fixed flat on the monitor tracking his vitals. Beside me stood Special Agent Sarah Harris.
"He signed the full confession forty-eight hours ago," Agent Harris reported, flipping a page on her electronic tablet. "He admitted to knowing about Harrison's offshore accounts, he admitted to forging your signature on the trust releases, and he gave up the names of three private private clinic directors who assisted in falsifying infant death certificates."
"And Eleanor?" I asked, my voice completely flat.
"Eleanor accepted a plea bargain to avoid a maximum-security facility," Harris replied coldly. "She was sentenced to twenty-eight years without the possibility of parole. Harrison received forty-five years under federal racketeering and human trafficking statutes."
I looked through the glass at Mark. I felt no hatred, no anger, and no desire for petty revenge. The law had done its work with surgical, clinical precision.

"And the five other families?" I asked softly.
"All five infants were safely reunited with their biological mothers three months ago," Agent Harris smiled, handing me an official court document bearing a gold judicial seal. "The story hit every international news network. The Sovereign Trust's assets across twelve countries have been permanently seized, generating over $140 million in civil restitution funds."
