Chapter 4 - The Price of Blood-4

The silence that settled over the library was so dense, so heavy, that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer blows against a anvil.

Harrison didn't reach for the black drive. He looked down at the matte-composite casing, his face remaining entirely impassive, though a subtle muscle along his jawline twitched once, twice.

Eleanor stood up from the sofa, her pearls clinking together. "What is the meaning of this insolence?! Mark, call security and have this hysterical woman removed from my property!"

"Shut up, Mother," Mark choked out, his voice barely a whisper. He was staring at the black drive with wide, terrified eyes. "Where... where did you get that, Elena?"

"I got it from the stroller on my lawn," I said, taking a step closer to the desk, leaning down until I was inches from Harrison’s face. "The thirty-two strollers representing the thirty-two children you've declared 'stillborn' or 'catastrophically collapsed' at Saint Jude Memorial over the last eight years."

Harrison raised his eyes to meet mine. The warm, compassionate doctor facade dissolved completely, revealing the cold, sociopathic monster beneath.

"You have no idea what you are looking at, Elena," Harrison said quietly, his voice dropping into a flat, icy register. "You see a tragedy. I see a global optimization protocol. The infants we select are placed with families who possess infinite resources—families who can fund medical research, build infrastructure, and shape the geopolitics of the world. What were you going to give him? A modest suburban life? A state university education?"

"He was my SON!" I screamed, the rage exploding from my throat like a physical force. "You stole him from my chest! You lied to me while I wept in that hospital bed!"

"You were paid, Elena," Eleanor spat, dropping her polite pretense entirely, her face contorting into an ugly, bitter mask of aristocratic arrogance. "Mark’s payout was structured as a family trust distribution. Half of those funds will be placed in a private account in your name once the final adoption papers clear tonight. You should be thanking us! You get to walk away with a million dollars and no burden!"

I turned to look at Mark. He couldn't meet my gaze; he kept his eyes fixed firmly on his scotch glass.

"You sold our baby, Mark," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "You looked me in the eyes at his empty crib and told me you couldn't bear to look at the room... when all the while you were waiting for the wire transfer to clear."

"It was two million dollars, Elena!" Mark suddenly blurted out, losing his composure completely, his voice cracking into a pathetic, defensive whine. "Do you have any idea how much debt my business was in?! We were going to lose this house! Uncle Harrison offered us a way out! Noah isn't going to be hurt! He's going to live in a palace in Zurich! He's going to be a billionaire!"

"He's an asset to them, Mark!" I yelled. "And you're a monster!"

Harrison calmly reached out and pressed a hidden button beneath the edge of the mahogany desk.

Within five seconds, the heavy double doors of the library clicked open, and two broad-shouldered private security guards in dark suits stepped into the room, their hands resting near their concealed shoulder holsters.

"Take Mrs. Vance to the sub-level holding room at the Blackwood Annex," Harrison instructed the guards without looking up from his desk. "Sedate her lightly. Once the clearance flight departs at midnight, we will arrange for her to be transferred to a long-term care facility in Panama."

"You won't get away with this," I said, stepping back as the guards approached me. "Clara has the master files. The federal task force is already tracking the satellite node."

Harrison let out a soft, dry laugh that made my stomach turn.

"Clara is a disgraced, unstable former nurse with a history of psychiatric institutionalization," Harrison said, picking up his fountain pen once more. "And the regional federal director happens to be a primary shareholder in the Sovereign Trust. Goodbye, Elena. You should have taken the quiet grief."

One of the guards grabbed my arm with an iron grip, driving his thumb into my pressure point. I fought back, kicking violently against his shin, but the second guard grabbed my other wrist, pinning my arms behind my back.

As they dragged me out of the library, I looked back at Mark one last time. He was pouring himself another double shot of scotch, refusing to look up as his wife was carried away into the dark.
