Chapter 6 - The Exodus at Midnight-6

The red emergency strobe lights cast rhythmic, bleeding shadows across the pristine glass of the neonatal nursery as Clara and I stepped through the automated double doors.

The air inside the room was warm, humid, and filled with the gentle, rhythmic hum of six biological life-support units.

I didn't hesitate. I ran straight to the third incubator.

I unlatched the acrylic canopy. My hands trembled as I reached inside, gently sliding my fingers beneath the warm, small body of my son. The moment my skin touched his, a deep, primal wave of emotion crashed through my soul. He stirred slightly, opening his tiny, dark eyes, letting out a soft, milky sigh as he nestled into the crook of my neck.

"I've got you, Noah," I whispered, tears spilling freely down my cheeks as I wrapped him securely in his swaddle blanket. "Mommy's here. I'm never letting you go again."

"Elena, we have three minutes!" Clara warned, her fingers flying across the digital control pads of the remaining incubators, transferring the five other infants into the specialized padded travel units she had brought in her duffel bag. "The backup diesel generators are about to kick in, and when they do, the master security lockdown will seal every exterior bulkhead in this building!"

"Where is the extraction point?" I asked, placing Noah carefully into the first travel unit, securing the harness across his chest with practiced speed.

"The old cargo elevator in the rear utility bay leads straight down to the Pier 9 drainage canal," Clara explained, slinging two of the lightweight infant carriers over her shoulders while I took the other three. "I have an inflatable speedboat waiting under the pilings. We cross the bay to the state park marina, where a team of independent state troopers is waiting."

"State troopers?" I looked at her, surprised. "I thought you said the authorities were compromised?"

"The local police chief is compromised," Clara smiled grimly. "The State Attorney General's Special Investigations Division is not. I transmitted your audio recording from Eleanor’s library to the AG’s private terminal fifteen minutes ago. They’ve already issued federal arrest warrants for Harrison, Mark, and Eleanor Vance."

Suddenly, the red emergency lights died.

The primary fluorescent lighting banks exploded back to life with a buzzing, high-pitched hum. The heavy iron security doors at the end of the main corridor slammed shut with a deafening, hydraulic thud.

CLANG.

Over the facility’s public address system, Harrison’s cold, smooth voice echoed through the speakers:

"Attention all security personnel. We have an active biological asset breach in Sub-Level 2. Execute Level 4 lethal containment protocols immediately. Do not allow the target to reach the water."

Clara’s eyes met mine. The time for stealth was over.

"Run!" Clara yelled.

We burst out of the nursery into the central hallway just as four armed private security operators turned the corner near the main elevator bank, their tactical rifles raised.

"FREEZE!" the lead guard bellowed.

Clara didn't freeze. She pulled a flashbang grenade from her tactical jacket, pulled the safety pin with her teeth, and hurled it straight down the corridor.

BOOM.

A blinding explosion of white light and concussive sound shattered the hallway. The security guards stumbled backward, clutching their ears and eyes in agony.

We sprinted past them through the cloud of acrid smoke, throwing our weight against the heavy iron crash-bar of the utility bay service door, bursting out onto the wet, wind-swept concrete platform of the rear loading dock.

The cold ocean rain hit our faces as the midnight sky roared with the thunder of an approaching storm.

Across the bay, the bright halogen searchlights of a private luxury yacht were cutting through the dark water, heading directly toward the Annex's private deep-water pier.

Standing at the edge of the loading dock, dressed in heavy rain slickers, were Dr. Harrison Vance, Eleanor Vance, and my husband, Mark.

Behind them stood six heavily armed international security contractors holding tactical automatic weapons.

We were trapped.
