Chapter 9 - THE FALL OF THE TITAN

-9-

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the glass-and-steel facade of Sterling Enterprises headquarters. For thirty years, this monolithic skyscraper had stood as an untouchable monument to corporate dominance—a place where politicians came to kiss rings, judges came for career advancement, and laws were rewritten behind closed mahogany doors.

Today, it looked like a crime scene.

Three federal transport vans blocked the circular driveway. Agents in dark windbreakers bearing FBI - OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL marched through the revolving glass doors carrying plastic evidence crates and seized server towers. A swarm of news vans and reporters crowded the perimeter, microphones thrust toward the entrance as live cameras broadcast the humiliation to millions of viewers across the state.

Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor, the atmosphere was a graveyard of broken power.

Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the long mahogany table. He hadn't touched his scotch. He hadn't tried to flee. He sat in his executive leather chair, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city he had ruled for decades, watching his empire dismantle itself in real time.

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two federal agents walked in, flanked by A.U.S. Attorney Thomas and Agent Miller. They didn't bother with corporate pleasantries.

"Arthur Sterling," A.U.S. Attorney Thomas said, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "You are under arrest for racketeering, securities fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Arthur slowly turned his head away from the window. He looked at the federal prosecutor, then down at the steel handcuffs dangling from the agent's hand. He let out a long, weary sigh—the sound of an old titan realizing the ground beneath his feet had finally turned to ash.

"You think putting me in cuffs changes anything?" Arthur asked, his voice raspy, carrying the bitter residue of a lifetime of absolute control. "The system was built by men like me, Ms. Thomas. Long after I'm gone, others will take my place."

"Maybe so," Thomas replied coldly, stepping aside as the agents stepped forward. "But today, you're just another criminal going to federal prison."

As the cold steel snapped around Arthur’s wrists and he was hauled out of his own boardroom, the phone on his mahogany desk began to ring.

It rang once. Twice. Three times.

No one answered. The Sterling empire was officially offline.
