Chapter 7 - THE FEDERAL NET CLOSES

-7-

The dial tone droned on in my ear—a steady, mechanical hum that sounded like a countdown to execution. I slowly lowered the heavy black receiver back onto the cradle of the vintage telephone. The plastic felt ice-cold against my fingertips.

"James? Who was that?" Emily asked, stepping out from the narrow hallway, her voice shaking so badly she could barely form the words. She had heard the tension in my voice, had seen the sudden, ashen drain of color from my face. "Was it... was it Arthur?"

"It was his chief legal counsel, Julian Vance," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I forced my brain to bypass the panic and start calculating variables. "They didn't just send thugs to our house last night. They left a parting gift."

Emily walked over to the oak table, gripping the edge of the wood for support. "What kind of gift?"

"They cleaned up the blood, wiped the real fingerprints, and planted my DNA all over the weapons," I said, looking down at the ruggedized laptop still connected to the secure flash drive. "They’ve framed us for the double homicide of their own contractors. As far as the state police are concerned right now, I’m a violent home-invader who snapped, killed two men, and went on the run with my kidnapped family."

Emily let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and fast. "Oh, God... we're fugitives. They've turned us into criminals."

"They tried to," I corrected her, stepping forward and placing my hands firmly on her shoulders. I looked deep into her eyes, refusing to let despair take root in the room. "Try is the operative word. Julian thinks he’s checkmated us. He thinks by threatening us with a murder charge, I’ll hand over the flash drive to save my own skin."

"Won't you?" Emily whispered, her voice cracking. "James, if they pin two murders on you, you’ll never see the sun again. Give them the drive. Let’s just give it to them and run—disappear into the mountains, go to Mexico, anywhere!"

"If I hand over that flash drive, we die anyway," I said, my voice dropping into an unyielding register. "Men like Arthur Sterling don't leave loose ends, Emily. The second they have the evidence, the 'hunt' becomes permanent. The only way we survive this is by going on the offensive."

Before Emily could answer, a low, ominous rumble vibrated through the floorboards of the cabin.

It wasn't thunder. It was the heavy, diesel-powered engines of large vehicles navigating the unpaved logging road outside.

I spun around, dashing across the rustic living room and peering out the corner of the small window overlooking the driveway. Through the swirling gray morning mist, two matte-black SUVs bearing state police insignia and tinted federal transport markings ground to a halt right at the edge of the tree line.

Doors flew open in unison. Half a dozen tactical operators clad in heavy black body armor and carrying automatic rifles spilled out onto the gravel, fanning out with military precision to surround the cabin.

"Federal warrants! Open the door!" a bullhorn blared from outside, the sound rattling the glass in the window frames.

Emily grabbed my arm, her fingernails digging deep into my skin. "James! They're here! What do we do?"

I glanced down at the ruggedized laptop screen. The progress bar for the encrypted data upload to the Department of Justice’s public whistleblower portal sat at 87%.

87%.

It needed three more minutes to complete the mirror-server handshake. If the feds kicked the door down right now, they would seize the hardware, wipe the drives, and lock us away before the truth ever saw the light of day.

"Hide Lily," I commanded, my voice razor-sharp. I grabbed her by the shoulders, steering her toward the back storage room. "Get her into the root cellar beneath the floorboards. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear."

"James, I'm not leaving you—"

"Go!" I barked, cutting her off.

She swallowed her tears, nodded frantically, and bolted down the hall toward the back room.

I turned back to the oak table. The progress bar ticked upward: 91%... 94%... 97%...

BAM!

The front wooden door of the cabin exploded inward, the deadbolt splintering as a tactical ram smashed through the frame. Heavy combat boots hit the floorboards with a deafening thud.

"Federal agents! Don't move!"

Three operators poured into the living room, their rifle barrels sweeping the space, locking onto me standing beside the oak table with my hands raised in the air.

"Hands on your head! Interlace your fingers!" the lead agent roared, stepping forward with his weapon trained squarely on my chest.

I slowly raised my hands, keeping my body positioned to block their view of the laptop screen. I glanced down at the display out of the corner of my eye.

100% - TRANSFER COMPLETE.

A small, green confirmation dialog box popped up on the screen: SECURE MIRROR PROTOCOL SUCCESSFUL. DATA BROADCASTING TO DOJ INTEGRITY DIVISION.

A quiet, grim smile touched the corners of my mouth.

"Mr. James Miller, you're under arrest for the murders of Marcus Vance and David Reed," the lead agent barked, lunging forward and slamming me hard against the oak table, his knee driving into my back as cold steel handcuffs snapped violently around my wrists.

May you like

As they hauled me toward the shattered front door, I caught a glimpse of the laptop screen. The confirmation window was still glowing green.

The bomb had been dropped. Now, all we had to do was watch the empire burn.
