Chapter 10 - REUNION AT DAWN

The sun was just beginning to paint the Blue Ridge foothills in brilliant shades of amber and rose as my sedan rolled back down the unpaved logging road toward Lucas’s hunting cabin.
The charges against me had been officially expunged within two hours of Arthur Sterling’s arrest. The two private contractors who had broken into my house hadn't been killed; they had been knocked unconscious, and federal agents had picked them up hiding in the woods nearby, flipping them on federal immunity deals before the sun had even set.
Sterling Enterprises was facing liquidation. Julian Vance was sitting in a federal holding cell awaiting arraignment alongside Arthur. And Ryan was facing a multi-count indictment for insurance fraud, kidnapping, and conspiracy that would guarantee he never saw the outside of a prison cell again.
I cut the engine and stepped out of the car.
The cabin door creaked open. Emily stepped out onto the wooden porch, her eyes wide, scanning my face as I walked up the steps.
"Is it... is it really over?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
"It's over," I said, pulling her into my arms, burying my face in her hair as a massive wave of relief washed over me. "Arthur Sterling is in federal custody. The company is being dismantled. We won."
From behind Emily, the screen door pushed open wider. Lily stepped out, rubbing her eyes sleepily, clutching Atlas the bear in one hand. She looked up at me, then at Emily, her little face searching for answers.
"Mommy? Daddy?" Lily asked softly. "Can we go home now?"

Emily knelt down, pulling Lily into a fierce, unbreakable embrace, tears streaming down her face. "We are home, sweetie. We're finally home."
I stood there on the wooden porch, looking out over the endless expanse of the mountains as the morning light chased away the last lingering shadows of the night. The nightmare was over. The ghosts had been laid to rest. And for the first time in two years, our family was truly whole again.
